Hello. My 5 month old daughter is having a difficult time pooping. She never had a problem before. She would go several times a day. She is still being breast fed. I do give her alittle bit of baby cereal but no more than 2 ounces in a day. My doctor told me to wait to give her more solid foods. So I am but now she goes about 2 days without pooping. Should I worry?

My oldest has always had a really hard time with pooping, my ped has had her om miralax and that works wonders there is some time when I have to give her an enema but the miralax usually works.

My son had the same problem my Ped told me that its not a cause for concern as long as the baby isnt screaming in pain, that just means that he is absorbing all the nutrients and has nothing to waste ESPECIALLY with breast fed babies, If it goes a considerable amt of time I would def call the ped if you have any question at all I would still call the Ped, mom knows best!! :)

My 7 year old had the same problem after he was on cow's milk, he was on a stool softener for EVER! it was horrible! but he outgrew it and learned eventually to go when he had to go (he would hold it for weeks at a time) so it could potentially be a problem but its not unusual for some people to go every couple of days or so. Oh and the cereal may be the problem, try making the cereal runny (more milk or juice) baby cereal can do that

Baby jucies are not good for kids they are full of sugars that the baby does not need.
You can give the baby 2 oz of water. As for the stool problem, as long as the baby does not have a fever, his belly is not hard, he is not fussy, and don't seem to be in pain when he has a bm, you can let it go, if the baby has not had a bm in 5 days call you pcp.

don't worry:)

The same the happened to my son when I started him on rice cereal. I lightened up, and when we tried introducing solid foods a little later, he became like clockwork.

It sounds like you have things under control communicating with your doctor. If it's just a few days, and she looks uncomfortable, you could try making her more comfortable and relaxed with baby massages, little leg stretches (extending legs straight and then bending them up to her belly... helps more with gas though) or lightly massaging her lower belly with your fingers.

Another thing to try is dilated prune juice or just a lot more water than normal. CHeck to see if she is straining when going. If she is straining then she might need some juice. If she is having normal poos (not hard and black) then it might be that she just takes a couple of days to process the food. My daughter was breastfead at 5 months and would get constipated. Dont worry about it unless its uncomfortable for her! Prune juice and water always fixes it for me!

Hi . I had this exact problem with my oldest . She would go WEEKS honestly without having a bowel movement .Then when she finally did she would bleed and she would have such a hard time . i tried everything !!!!!!!! I went to pediatricians , nutritionists, she had so many test for various things such as siliac disease ( its an intolerance toward bread, yeast products .. doesn't sound like a disease to me but thats what it is lol) she didn't have any thing wrong with her though .... Anyway she had X- rays done one day and they found her whole entire bowel ( which is very long) was filled with waste . I tried juices and any over the counter thing i could get .. I finally tried lactulouse( I think that's how its spelled) im not sure if you have it in your area . That was the only thing that worked for her . Now she is 5 years old and grown out of that which is another thing my pediatrician told me . That give her a few years she will grow out of it ...and she did . She goes like clock work now lol .. So try not to worry too much Im sure it will pass too . and of course try the prune juices and prune baby food too . and maybe if they have lactulouse in your area you could give that a try .. good luck

I was always told not to worry unless its been more than three days. My son still has constipation trouble. When he was a baby my doctor told me to put dark karo syrup in his bottle or the cereal and that will help.

I know you can give the baby some Karo Syrup to help him....Also even if the doctor says not to introduce the baby to juice you can....start out like apple juice....1/2 of apple juice to 1 1/2 ounces of water.

When my daughter was only having breastmilk she only did a poo once a week or so...... the record was 11 days before a poo!! and this was still considered normal for a solely breastfed baby. Once she started solids she was much more regular and did one most days however some babies do get a bit constipated with the rice cereal because of the added iron. It happened with my daughter so we just stopped the rice cereal and chose other first foods to give her. If your little one is getting a bit constipated and is straining to poo maybe stop the cereal but I wouldn't worry too much if she only poos every few days but is happy and not in pain or straining to do it.

When my son had this problem, my ped said not to worry too much a breastfed baby can go up to 2 or 3 days without pooping because he is absorbing so many of the nutrients there isn't as much waste. Hope this helps.
