I had that with my 2nd. They saw the sack but nothing inside of it. A week later i went back and had it redone and the baby was bigger than it was suppose to be. So I wouldn't get to worried about it just yet. (by the way I had the vaginal one done and it still just showed a sack with nothing in it)

I am an ultrasound tech, there are many number of reasons that he rescheduled you. Maybe you were a little early and he wants accurate dating, maybe your bladder wasn't as full as it could have been. Some Doctors prefer not to do TV because it's invasive and extremely uncomfortable for mom. If the Dr. was worried about what he saw he would have done a TV because that would have given him a much clearer picture. I don't believe there is any reason to be alarmed.

I had a Trans vaginal done early on and it had only shown an empty sac. They told me I would likely miscarry because there was no baby and wanted me to have a D&C. Well I refused and waited a month. At 12 weeks exactly they performed another Trans vaginal and my baby was shown safe and sound. I'm now 31 weeks and eagerly expecting my 2nd baby girl in April. Every ones pregnancy is different keep your head up and Good luck!

This question is from February and should be closed. But truly the purpose of the 1st ultrasound is to determine your due date. When its done by last period alone it can be very wrong since women ovulate at different times in their cycle. However in the first few weeks all fetuses develop at the same rate so if they see more than expected they will adjust your due date sooner or if they see less than expected they adjust your due date later.

For example I ovulate late and for both my pregnancies I was seen (had an ultrasound) at what was assumed to be 7 weeks if going by my period but the ultra sounds showed only a 6 week fetus and my due dates were moved back a week. They can definitely see "something" if a transvaginal is done at 6 weeks and beyond. As for the abdominal I'm not sure exactly when they can get results from that consistently but probably after 8 weeks.

This happened to me. They saw the sac but nothing in it, I came back in 2 weeks and everything was normal and they found the heartbeat. Turns out my due date was wrong. My original due date was 10/19/2009 but they changed it to 11/11/2009 after the ultrasound, so that's why they couldn't see anything at my "6 week" ultrasound... I was only 3 weeks!

I had an abdominal scan at 6 weeks 5 days pregnant due to fears of an eptopic pregnancy, they were able to see the sac and babies heartbeat on screen which looked nothing more than a tiny flutter. From reading all the other responses it seems I am an exception to the rule, they even gave me a photo from tge scan...though there is not a great deal to see!

I had a normal sonogram with my baby when I was just eight weeks and they saw I miscarried. When u go back if u see what looks like a bouncey ball u have miscarried. U can see the baby just fine without doing a transvaginal at seven weeks. I had my first at seven weeks with my last baby who is two months and was able to see him just fine. Do not worry til u have too

i was five weeks, but bc they had scheduled a dnc then checked my hormones which had gone from180, to over2,0000 they thought i was having a tubal pregnancy, and they saw the baby, and the heartbeat, it was at 95bpm. Although, it was early, and they had a heck of a time finding it, but i guess it depends on the technician doing the scan, the one who did my transvaginal had been at her job for twenty yrs, and at that point the baby really did look, like a little bean.

I had a transvagina done at 6 weeks and theyy saw an embryo but no heart beat so they have me coming back im at 7 weeks to see if they can see one then. But to answer,ur,question I dont think u should worry because they truley should have done an transvaginal ultrasound.

Its too early for them to see the baby because the baby is so small. That happened to me when i found out and I was so confused because I felt like i was half pregnant. But when i did go back a couple weeks later we saw the baby!! Be happy your preggo and be patient you will see you baby soon. Also visit my blog www.beyoncespregnant.com

i had an abdo scan at 5w5d and it worked fine, i admit all you could see was a little jellybean with a flicker of a heartbeat but at least with an abdo scan the baby is a bit more protected from the ultrasound but your tissue, if they do a vag scan there is pretty much nothing between baby and the scanner not to mention the fact its in you and why on earth would you want that

as the tech informed you- just go back at the time frame that they informed you. its to get a clearer pic/ etc....

i just had the 2 different ultrasounds- vaginal and the one where they rub the that thingy on your stomach just to see a pic so they can determine a date.

i also had a home scan too. my son's ex best friend used to be a damn what was she besides a nutcase? anyways, she had a thingy where you can hear the heartbeat. she had to use it on me with my last pregnancy because my son's dad and i and the ex friend were all disputing, my son's dad bumped into me as i was by the friends' fridge. i was dashed over to a nearby recliner chair and she rushed to get the thingy to make sure the baby was okay. she even shown mine vs his. you can tell the difference between the heartbeats.

@Jessalyn Middendorf
Tiffany was correct in her post that you need a full bladder for the transvaginal. They have to check certain things with your bladder full then they will let you empty your bladder to get a better look at the baby. I got a paper from my OB with instructions for the transvaginal US and it clearly stated that you needed to drink a full glass of water about an hour before your US so that your bladder would be full so they can see what they need to!

My doctor does a transvaginal utrasound early also b/c you can't see anything with an abdomen one this early usually. I had a miscarriage with our last one and I am pregnant again and the first thing the doctor pointed out with this one was that she saw the sac and it looked good to see that. I don't think she saw that sac with my miscarried angel. We also saw the baby though. Maybe the baby is hiding since it's so early I don't know. But if he's having you come back i n two weeks try not to worry. If your dr saw something wrong they would have probably tried anything they could to see the baby. Try to relax and if you can't call your Dr and ask why thye didn't do that. Maybe there's a reason. Just don't be afraid to ask any questions especially when it comes to you being nervous about this. Sometimes if you don't tell them then they just think well she's ok with our results. The worst that can happen if you ask is for them to say no. I guess if it comes to that get a second opinion. I really wish you luck.

I'm pretty sure I had a transvaginal ultrasound done with my 1st baby when I was around 5-6 weeks? And they found 2 sacs but only a baby in 1 of them. I'm pretty sure I had a tiny amount of spotting before then so I have constantly wondered if maybe I lost one of the babies? I guess I will never know. Fingers crossed for you that everything is ok! Maybe go back and request a transvaginal ultrasound?? Good luck :)

When I was pregnant with my daughter I had my first ultrasound at about 7 weeks as well. They tried the abdominal, but because my uterus tilts back they couldn't see enough to see if there was a baby there, as my bladder was in the way, so I had to have a transvaginal ultrasound, but none of my friends had to have one when they were pregnant, so it seems to just depends on the person, and how their uterus is situated. You should maybe ask the doctor if they can try a trasvaginal to be sure though, cause you should be able to find the baby at 7 weeks, my doctor told me that they don't do scans before 6 weeks, but after that they should be able to see the baby, even if it's not much more than a little beating speck. (When they did mine they showed me and it looked like a ring, and the baby was the diamond.)

A fetal heartbeat is very difficult to see on an abdo ultrasound. It does not mean that there is no heartbeat it just means its too early. To pick up a fetal heartbeat you need a transvaginal Ultrasound or a BHCG blood level above 2500. Hope this helps. I am a midwife that is where my information comes from.

My doctor did a transvagial at five weeks and only saw the sac. They said it was too early to see anything else. That told me that they usually see something at about five and a half weeks. I had another one done at 7 weeks and they saw a heat beat and the beginning of a baby. I am now nine weeks and doing well.

They seem to not like doing trans vaginal in some places so as to not aggrivate the cervix!

I had that same problem. I went when I was around 6 weeks and they couldnt see anything at all but the sac. Just looked like a big black hole. First they did a abdominal and when they couldnt see anything they did a transvaginal. I did go back in 2 weeks and they saw the yolk sac and a little fetus. They also saw a heartbeat. Now I am 28 weeks wit my little girl and boy I cant wait till she is here. I am starting to get where I am tired of being pregnant.. lol But you should be fine. They also did a blood test.

This happened to a friend of mine, She was about 7 weeks the first time she went in and they didn't even see the sac but the doctor KNEW she was pregnant. When she went back a week or two later the doctor was able to find baby and heartbeat and everything was perfect. Now she is 14 weeks and everything is still great and completely normal. I would try not to worry too much. It will only make you stress more than you need to right now.

Good Luck! :)

I had a transvaginal when I was 9 weeks (that was the earliest any ob/gyns could see me) and then an abdominal at 13 weeks. Then I had another abdominal at 18 weeks and that's when they told me the sex. I never had another ultrasound after that - not that I wouldn't have wanted one - they just never offered.

When I ended up being "supposedly" two weeks late, they had me go for an ultrasound to check on the baby and the ultrasound technician wouldn't even let me see the baby! She was such an uber bitch! I was so excited to see the baby and she pointed the screen AWAY from me and when I was like "Can I watch?" she said "I'm really busy right now and have to check on other patients after this, you don't want to see anyway, it's black and white and hard to tell what's what." ... uh, what? I could see five fingers and five toes when she was 13 weeks and the doctor could see her vagina when she was 18 weeks on the exact same machine! But oh well, I got to see my daughter out in the open just a week later anyway, but still!

I am currently 35 weeks pregnant and when i was 5 weeks and 5 days I had an abdominal ultrasound done and they were able to print me a picture of the gestational sack and the little aby (or my peanut as i called him at the time :P) I was able to see something butwith my first they couldnt see anything at that point as well as many friends of mine who have had healthy babies. Mostly between 9-12 weeks they will give you a clear picture ad you'll know. If the radiologist said it was too early than thats probably it. I have miscarried as well and when i did (at 7 weeks), i had ben to the ultrasound lab at 6 weeks and they said that it was twins or possibly a malformation. since they had only a 30% chance of each, they asked me to come back in 2 weeks (and i think they knew what was going to happen)
Go with your gut but if they didnt seem concerned, i wouldnt worry just yet :)
Good Luck and most importantly *CONGRATS!*

Don't stress. I know easier said than done. You could have just had a tec that didn't know how to do a transvag one. Or who just wasn't good at reading the US. I had 6 US with my baby and I had a couple really bad tech's if they saw a sac and it was in the right place and you haven't bleed. You are prob fine. Your doc can send you for blood work to check your beta HCG levels and they can tell if its viable from that. I had a M/C before my son and that's how we figured it out. Keep your head up. Xoxo

Once they did the vaginal one they could see something inside the sac but it was just a tiny dot. I wouldnt worry if they couldnt see anything you are not far enough along

I had a similar experience at 9 weeks but my doctor didn't see anything at all. Just wait it out because most times the baby is too small to be seen early on. I was also sent for and ultrasound at advanced radiology because the equipment in the doctors office is outdated.

I would say it's too early to worry. With this current pregnancy they did abdominal and transvaginal and couldn't see anything, even the yolk sac. I was completely freaked out. I came back in two weeks and had a different tech and everything was fine.

Keep in mind part of it may be your OB, part of it may be your technician. Our first tech was apparently new and didn't know you had to "zoom in" using the computer or what to look for.

Good luck! I'm sure everything is just fine.

i wouldnt be too worried just yet....with both my kids, i was never sent for an ultrasound before 8-10 weeks cause its too early and situations like this can happen, where nothing shows on the screen and now mom is freaking out cause all these bad thoughts are now running thru your head. Vaginal ultrasounds aren't usually performed over an abdominal unless you were farther along say like 3 months but the abdominal is not picking up a 3 mth fetus, but rather something close to a 4-5 week size type deal. The vaginal is a back up method to confirm or deny what the abdominal says. I wouldn't fret about it now, like the doc said, wait the 2 weeks, and if this ultrasound comes back the same, then request a vaginal, or a second opinion. Putting undue stress on the body especially in the first trimester is not healthy, so try to relax! Technology is good, but not perfect :) If you aren't already sign up to sites like babyweekly.com that give you week by week progress of your baby at each stage. and there is lots of interesting reads on there too. Good luck! :)
