My 8 month old sucks her two fingers (pointer and middle) to soothe herself to sleep and when shes stressed. She doesn't do this all day long. She started around 2-3 months old. She never took to the pacificer much and when we give it to her she takes it out and plays with it and then goes back to the fingers. She just recently got two bottom (middle) teeth and granted they aren't grown in all the way they are starting to look crooked (pointing inwards).I think its because of her finger sucking. I know they are baby teeth but still is this bad? Am I just being paranoid? When should we attempt to break her of this habbit?

This is going to sounds strange.. But i did the same then when i was a kid.. all the way through my teens. Eventually i stopped on my own.. but I do notice when i have problems with allergies or cold i resort to the habit again.. I think for some reason it opens up the nasal breathing pathways and eases any anxious attempts to breathe that may agarvate the situation and bring on hyerventilation.. it relaxes me and allows me to sleep more easily when i have mild congestion. As long as the sucking is gental and there are not any severe marks on the namds from the teeth i wouldnt it worry about it.. It must be a natural mechanism to bring relaxation and ease of breathing in sleep.. I used to worry about it myself.. but I think breathing is more important than any cosmetic benefit that might concern you.

My cousin in 4 years old and still sucks on her fingers. It is a comfort thing like thumb sucking. She could also be doing it because of teething. My daughter will put her fingers in her mouth when her new teeth are coming in. She has all except for her 2-year-old molars and she's only 16 months. I wouldn't worry about it until she's stops teething. You could always ask your doctor and see what they have to say about it.

i don't think it is anything 2 worry about most babies find one way or another to soothe themselves, your childs teeth should b fine.

angela....hey darl...your beautiful 8 mth old sucking her fingers is not a bad thing for her....as you stated she was not interested in a dummy plug....therefore her fingers have become her pacufier and they also help to sooth her gums with teething. i am a mother of two very ferral kids(in my mind they are ferral). i also wok in childcare with many of diffenent children with different ways to calm themselves. do you remember when you were a child. did you have a blanket or such a comforter and how you felt with it??....if to it is the same for your little 1 she will out grow it in time and i wouldnt stress about the baby teeth the second lot will grow through fine. cheers lea

I agree with Haley, i had a cousin who sucked her two fingers and she was fine(well her teeth), the only thing though is that she developed calous like blisters on the tops of her fingers.. it was never an issue, just didnt look nice, but i think at 8 months its part of what some babies do..

hi, just to tell you about my younger sister, she is 17 and has been sucking her fingers since she was born! nothing stops her. she does it when she tired or bored or just not doing anything in general.

if there is something you can do while they are young then do it as it effects thier teeth and their fingers and not a nice habit to carry through life with them. xx

I wouldn't worry to much, I have a 1 year old that sucks his two middle fingers and I don't think much about it (his teeth are straight) . My 2 year old sucks his thumb and his two top teeth are pulled out slightly because of it. I have just purchased a product that you paint onto the thumb (or fingers) that tastes gross and stops the habbit. I asked the pharmasist if he was too young and they said "no". I wouldn't worry about the problem at her age but maybe tackle it when he is a bit older and still doing it. Hope this helps. By the way, I sucked my fingers up until about 8 years. I have really straight teeth.
