9 Month Old Needs Sleep Training

I'm a stay-at-home mom with a very happy 9 month old boy. He's been exclusively breastfed (never had a bottle) and co-slept until 8 months of age. We moved him into his room at 8 months because he resisted co-sleeping (he's a bigtime mover) and it was becoming unsafe. I read Pantley's No Cry Sleep Solution and it completely changed our day time life. His sleep schedule is

7am - awake

9-10:30 AM nap

1-3 PM nap

He has a very consisted bedtime routine, eats solids 3 times a day and nurses before each nap, in the morning, and right before bed. He takes his naps in his crib.

HE WAKES UP EVERY HOUR AT NIGHT AND NEEDS TO BE PUT BACK TO SLEEP. I'm exhausted and now it's affecting my ability to be the mom I should be during the day. Dad can't help out at night. He's suffering from anger issues and is seeing a counselor and is advised to walk away in stressful situations (ie. crying baby) until further notice.

I was told to read Weissbuth's book and so I did. I couldn't bring myself to do the extinction method so we've tried check-ins. (We saw his doctor and got approval before starting this.) He's now sleeping about every three hours and seems to be happy with water instead of the breast. Tonight would be our 3rd night, but this morning he screamed for an hour (4am) with our check-ins. Should I keep doing this?? Is there another way. Like I said, I really tried Pantley's methods, but they just did not work for our son at night. Please only share your success stories, not judgemental opinions. Thanks.
