My son will be 4 this month and knowss the alphabet but cant recognize the letters on paper and cant write them. I bought the books where you can trace the letters but he is so amazed by it and loves tracing the letters that he doesnt take the time to remember how to write them without tracing, or which letter is which. How did everyone teach their kids?

Start with 3-4 letters at a time, introduce the sounds the letters make rather than their names (faster pathway to reading) let your child explore the sounds by matching them to different animals or objects around the house. Make learning fun! If it becomes a task, they will always dread it! Instead of doing handwriting drills, let them practice their letters in the sand at the park, or with chalk on the sidewalk. Let them strengthen their fine motor skills with things like playdough and Legos and squirt toys, once their muscles are better developed they will be more successful with writing letters. It takes time, patience and encouragement :) have fun!

Quoting Devon:

I would start off with flash cards. let him go through them for a while and then sit him down one day for about a half hour to an hour and let him trace the first letter and then tell him to write the same letter on a seperate piece of paper. if he doesn't do it right, take his hand in yours and help him make the letter and let him repeat this until he writes the letter correctly. then go to the next letter and so on. if he is in daycare, ask the teachers if they would be willing to take a few moments of there time to help him with this as well. just remember to be patient with him and make sure you are in a room where he won't get distracted. good luck and hopefully this will work for you :)

my little girl got so pissed when i tried to do that! she acted like she was a caged animal hahahah
