I had the Epidural while in Labour with my son and ive had nothing but back pain since.

I'm in agony everyday and find it hard doing even the most simple household tasks,

so i was just wondering if anyone else is going through the same type of back trouble since having the Epidural as me?

My lower back aches sometimes randomly, or if I've been bending over (like cleaning the tub or something) for too long, I have to straighten up really slow and it's really painful. And I had my son nearly 4 months ago.

a lot of times its not the epidural it is the straining of the back during and after pregnancy.

I had really bad back pain while I was pregant and its never gone away. I did end up having an epi during labor that I do not remember having I didnt agree to it and really didnt want one, I have pain down my hip and into my leg from it though. My best friend also has the same pain in her hip and leg and her kids are almost 6 years old so I fear I dont have any hope. It does sound like they hit a nerve which most of the time does go away but it can take a very long time to heal. I wish you the best of luck and Congratulations >^^

I had problems with the epidural during labor. after i had back pain for a LONG time and a weird rash right where they put the needle in. and my friend who had an epidural has "permanent damage" . she went to see someone about surgery on her back to fix it.

i had epidural 9 years ago, and i have pain in my lower back where i had it, it used to hurt once in awhile, and now im pregnant with my 3rd child it got worse, and i'm going to have another epidural with this child, but going to consult my anthestic person.. when i lay down it helps, and putting heat on it, but i am also too wonderering if this is going to be a problem with my back for the rest of my life.

I had alot of back pain after my epidural... My legs would often hurt as well! I couldnt sit withouth my feet up and had to have my hubby rub my back everynight. I finally went in to the er one night because I couldnt sleep the pain was too bad. Come to find out I have Degenerative Disc Disease in my back which is bad arthritis. My pregnancy and the epidural just made it worse. I felt like a baby because my epidural hurt so bad I was told it didnt but when they put the needle in I cried! It hurt because my vertebrae is closer together because of the arthritis. Maybe you should go in to the doc and have them do an x-ray on your back to see whats going on?

My sister-in-law had the same thing happen to her. She ended up in the emergency room because the pain got too much to handle. The doctors figured out that when she got her epidural they hit a nurve and it caused intense pain.

Yeah I had a little bit of back pain for close to 6 months I also found my back pain was worse while breastfeeding (opbviously didn't have very good posture while feeding, the midwife would probably rouse on me). Maybe this could also be contributing (if feeding obviously).

I had a epidural and I have the same problems with my back. I can't stand, sit or lay for long periods of time. My husband carried my daughter for the most of the time if we were out. From where they put the epidural in my back I can't have anything touch me. It sound weird but it feels as if the spine itself hurts. Now if you aren't taking anything for the pain the only thing that works for me is a heating pad, yeah I know that it doesn't work all the time. But what I gotten from the doctors is there is nothing that can be done but pain meds. And I'm not willing to take them.

I have on and off back pain just in the site the needle went through (7 times!!) The first 5 times the needle hit bone (he kept saying "No, that's bone" finally I said "I know, I can feel it, please stop saying that.") Then finally he got it in, only to find out it only took to one side!! I said I didn't care I would deal with it, but I was on pitocin and my contractions were on top of each other so about an hour later I decided to allow him to move it. Thank goodness it went back in no problem. No more epidurals for this chicki!

I had pain in my back from my epidural too. but it wasn't agony it just hurt when i got out of bed or bent over. It lasted for about 5 months and now i don't feel it at all. i think its different with everyone and also depends on how good your doctor was at doing it. Hope it gets better for you soon! xx

i was horrified about getting an epidural but with as much pain as i was in for my first child...i went for it. i was happy after i had it. i did have back pain for about 4 - 5 months after mine. it didn't hurt all the time...it was more of a sharp pain when i bent and twisted a certain way. it was very uncomfortable. i talked to my doctor and she said to start doing some exercises to strengthen my stomach and back. my pain stopped. i am now three weeks to go until my due date with my second child and i plan on having another one. if you are in constant pain and can't get any comfort...tell your doctor. they can recommend a workout to help or pain medicine if nothing works. it is true that if the anesthesiologist messes up they can severly injure your spine. that why with this pregnancy i have thoroughly researched the anesthesiologist who will be doing mine and i feel comfortable that she will do a good job.

i had bad pain after my epidural 3 1/2 years ago in my lower back and down my legs took about 12 months to ease, I can still point out the exact location the epidural went in as I am stil tender. Sorry, but there is no quick fix you just have to wait it out. Maybe you could go back to the hospital and see the anethesist?

Look into cranial sacral. It is a massage technique that will do wonders for you!

Yes, my best friend is still suffering from her last epidural. Somehow her spinal fluid began to leak when they removed the catheter from her spine. After two patches to her spine, she now gets terrible migraines and electric feeling "shocks" up her spine. Unfortunately, no doctor has been able to help her--they only say that they think it is unrelated.

Mine is an on again off again thing!!! The hubby is really good at massages. I hope you find something to help. I had 5 without any drugs and opted for the epidural with #6. What was I thinking?!?!

I had a full spinal block as I had a c section and 6 months on and I still occasionally get a tingling sensation down the left side of my back, I also occasionally get a very sore lower back but nothing that an anti inflamatory can't fix or even a panadol. Maybe you should go see an osteopath or chiropractor and ask their advice on some pain relief. I've had a few friends who have had severe back pain like you and they've gone to see a chiropractor or osteopath and it's helped!

i had the epidural with all 3 of my deliveries the only one i had trouble with was my second one. i started getting headaches soon after i had my son. and the epidural didnt work. i was released on a thursday and ended up i the hospital that friday i had a blood patch done i thought it worked until i got home and started having headaches again i went back in the hospital that saturday i could hardly walk i was in so much pain. i was crying and didnt want to move. i had a second blood patch done and it didnt work and the hospital refused to do a third blood patch on me. so i had to go threw 10 day of horrible headaches. i couldnt care for my new born or my other son and my husbands older 2 kids we have custody of.my mom had to come and get the kids at 7am every day and our friend came and took the other 2 to school after i would crawl in there rooms and get them up for school. and because of the headaches i developed post pardem because i couldnt take care of my kids the way i wanted to do. i had an epidural with my third son and it went off without any problem i was so scared to get another one but it worked and i had no problems really back pain every now and then.

I had an epidural with my daughter that had to be redone because it wasnt done right.. its very common to have back pain after an epidural because they dont know EXACTLY where they are going.. thats why you have to tell them when you feel pain when they are doing it. But yea its common to back back pain after. I still once in a while feel like a pin in my back.

I had an epidural for my 2 1/2 year old and my back still bothers me. I also tried to have another epidural for my 1 1/2 year old, they checked me and said I had time to get one done. I sat up and the guy was trying to get it in when I felt like I had to push, so they checked me again and they had to pull out the needle fast I rolled over and baby rolled out... By pulling out the needle fast caused me to get a Spinal Headache and I'll never have another epidural again.

I strained my back muscles with the epidulral but the pain wasnt "agony" and didnt last more than a week(ish). If the pain is that severe then I recommend seeing someone about it - your back isnt something I would play 'wait and see' with

I had the epidural while in labour with my son and after probably a month in a half I started having a real bad pain on my left shoulder blade and that was some uncomfortable pain ever but it finally went away, I think within a couple weeks or more.

I had pain for about 2 months afterwards. It was awful, but one day it vanished. I hope the same happens to you. Also i recommend telling your doctor, especially if the pain affects your everyday routine.

I had the spinal done with my c-section and I started having problems immediately with my back hurting. While in the hospital they had to keep heating pads on it, and its been almost 3 years and I still hurt in my back. Doctors think that I have some nerve damage from it.

It actually never occurred to me post partum that my lower back pain was a result of the epidural. I agree with Nikki on the core strength. Since working at getting back into shape, the only back pain I experience now is from menstrual cramps. :-P

I always thought the reason my back hurt was because of the epidural, until my doctor told me that i need to work on my core strength, I had amazing abs before baby and now obviously I have a belly. I started working on my abs slowly day by day and to my surprise my back pain has decreased immensely. Before come night time once I sat down I couldnt even move, now I can run around and at the same time my abs are looking like they could come back soon hehe so it killed two birds with one stone:)

I have 3 kids. I had epidurals for all three. I found that after each child my back has gotten worse each time. The first two times the back pain was only once in a while. Now after my last one (he is 5 months) I have back pain everyday !

ive been to the docs and she refferred me to physio but just the thought of being bent all shapes scares the hell out of me lol

But the thing that annoyes me is that they keep brushing me off with physio and their not realy looking into what the actual problem is with my back and it just seems to be getting worse, but my doctor has given me Tramadol for the pain but it doesnt seem to be helping so i thing i'll take your advice and try the swimming pool :-)

Thank you Maria x

my epidural didn't even TAKE! i won't get one again. i just ended up with so much back pain after. i've been taking some homeopathic stuff lately for nerve damage. seems to really be helping out a lot. i'm going all natural next time. the pain really wasn't that bad and only lasted a short time compared to my back now. ugh. i'm NOT getting pregnant again though until my back feels better. i couldn't imagine. i hope it starts to feel better for you soon!

lol yeah im thinking the exact same.....wish i just took the pain.

The worst thing about it is, is that it only worked for half hour, and as soon as my son was born i got off the bed and walked to the toilet by myself lol, i really wish i didnt have it now.

Thanx for your reply Maranda :-)

I had a full spinal block for c-section. For months afterwards I had a numb left bum check. It was horrible. It did go away and back to normal. My back pain now is from having weak abdominal muscles and carrying my huge child (now 13 months) around all the time.
