i got my Mirena IUD in a little over a year ago and now am experiencing dizziness, forgetfulness, large amounts of clear discharge, odor that won't go away, sleeplessness, body ache, horrible acne and weight gain. has anyone else had issues like this and any recommendations for a different birth control?

wow, i am surprised to see that there are so many other women who have had the same kind of symptoms as i have had. i honestly thought i was an anomaly and with all of the problems i have been having, i have even felt like i was going crazy! i am going to have mine removed and try to go without any BC for a while. i think my body needs to get back to normal and i want to let it do what its meant to naturally do. thank you to everyone who shared...it has really helped me to take a step in the right direction.

Yeah I had all of that and STILL got pregnant on it! My husband was deployed so it "worked" while he was gone but within the week he got back I was pregnant. It seems all it did do was give me a TON of discomfort and problems. Hope it gets better for you!

I've had the Mirena ring for 10 months. Had I only known I would feel this bad I would have NEVER had it put in.

I experienced severe bleeding that lasted for weeks last year before having the ring put in at the suggestion of a GYN. The only positive thing that has happened is the bleeding stopped with one week of having the ring inserted.

At first it seemed to be the right choice for me, but then I started to notice side effects about four months in. I would have to say the mood swings have been the worst, followed by zero desire for sex, weight gain, significant forgetfulness, embarrasing odor and skin tags.

I plan on having it removed soon, the side effects are just not worth it.

My advice for women who are considering it, do your RESEARCH before making a decision.

I had Mirena and I was a total wreck! I was depressed, and moody...not to mention the 35 pounds I gained! I had it removed and within 2 weeks I was just about back to normal, and already lost 6 of the pounds. I ended up going with the Paraguard, an IUD without the hormones. It's so much better! I still have the convienance without all those hormones!

i have no health card, live in a new province aside from my birth province. Cldnt get a health card cuz i didnt have my birth cert. Talk to someone! there has to be a free sexual health clinic you can go to thats what i did, after i told them all my symtopms they had me in the room within 45 mins and after talking with the first nurse i had her scared, the second nurse was a real bitch and almost didnt take it out, but i would not have left with that thing inside me, i was coming out, but after much "cnvincing" the damn nurse FINALLY listened and idk realised its my body not hers (?) and 2 mins later it was out, it was about as discomforting coming out as it was going in but within about 30 mins (the knowledge it was out helped im sure) i just started to feel normal, and surprisingly, within that time the bleeding even decreased a bit. good luck

my sympoms came within the first 8 months, but it took a year and a half an c.o.m. to realise what my problem was. Oh yea it also cost me my relationship with my daughters father. I was depressed, had ZERO sex drive, moody doesnt even being to describe what i was, i felt like i was hitting puberty all over again, had heart palpitations, constantly felt like i was having a never ending panic attack and anxiety attack. My anxiety pills did not work. I had no weight gain, but my weight plateaus at 98lbs. I bled almost constantly for the last year, i would have like a 2 day break from the bleeding. After it was out, i had an immense sence of relief that the mirena was outta me, but then it was make up to my body for what i had done to it. My gf thought i was anemic cuz of how much/often i bled. Being in a province i dont have a health card for i am unable to go to see a doc so COM has been extremly helpful to me about the stupid form of bc. To those it works for props to you. To those it dont, unfortunatly its so very common, even the girl who lives aross the fence from me has experienced the EXACT same issues as us all. Get it outta ya and get your lives back, there are so many other options of bc. I have decided because i cant be reliant to take pills, no one cld pay me enough to do mirena or try depo or anything for that matter that STAYS in you. The ring... meh id have to again remember to take out and put in, i am now learning to "know" my body and when i am fertile. Im not going to let the pharmasutical company mess with this temple anymore, Its my temple to do what i want with, im not a science project and i didnt sign up to be a cold hearted, moody, sexless entity. Good luck ladies, take back your bodies!!!!

I just actually got mine removed (ttc #2 soon). I had it in for 14 months and really loved it. I think i spotted for the first 2 months off and on, and had a little cramping some. I had no periods (which was great). I really think this type of BC worked for me.

I had the Mirena IUD for three months and bleed the entire time with cramping all day long. It was awful! Now months later I have been diagnosed with endometriosis and I'm wondering has anyone else had this after having the IUD? They don't know what causes it but I was fine until the IUD, just wondering...

i decided against mirena and went with an alternative iud that uses no hormones. its called paraguard and is an iud without the hormones that make u feel sick. it lasts for 10 yrs instead of 5 if the hormones are giving you the side effects, which is what the majority sounds like, then i would look into this one. its been in use for over 20 yrs and has less side effecs then any other birth control.

I love it if you have the worst in the world you will be great full to this invention. I can save my sick days for when i am sick not doubled over in pain with cramps!

Thanks! I was just thinking of getting one. Last week, I spoke to a friend and asked how was another friend's pregnancy going, and she told me that she'd lost the baby, and it's the fourth miscarriage she's had, just like her sister, who's lost three babies as well, and what they both had in common was that they'd used Mirena for a long period of time too...

Wow! These horror stories are really freaking me out. I'm already battling depression, and have had hypothyroidism for years. So if the Mirena is causing any of that, I'm not gonna know!

But otherwise, I've loved it. I used to have horrible, horrible cramping and incredibly heavy periods. Now it's just a very light spotting for about four or five days in the month, no cramps. No cysts, hair loss, or anything like that. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.

I don't have insurance, so I don't know how to afford something else anyway. Or even how to get it removed! Can't afford several hundred dollars a pop, ya know? I just hope I continue to be lucky - it'll be 2 years in June.

I use Implanon and its a rod that they stick in your arm and it last for 3 years. They inject a 2 inch rod that is flexible. It takes a week to heal completely, then you forget about it. It does not hurt when you touch it after its in it wont poke you from inside. I love it! I haven't had any problems with it at all! I am going into my 2 year with it and I promise you don't notice its there. Your periods will probably go crazy and the flow will decrease. My experience has been a regular cycle to none at all and small flow, hardly any cramps. You can't see it sticking out of your arm and you can't break it while it's in your arm. If you can stand 3 days of minor pain then you should try it!

I thought that you weren't supposed to bleed when you have the IUD??? Well maybe it just depends on the IUD you get... ??? My dr told me that I most people don't have periods and if they do, they are very light. She did say that some people consistantly bleed and that's not normal and if that happened to me, then I'd need to have it removed. I've had it for about a year and a half and haven't had many problems with it. I lightly bled for the first couple of months, but I guess that's normal after having it put in. Then I lightly bleed once a month for about 5 days. I have a little more pain when I obvulate, but don't have cramps at all when I menstrate. I hope I don't have any issues with it in the future... I'm a little worried now.

Also, i have noticed some discharge and facial acne as well. I also have experienced lots of forgetfulness, irritability, mood instability, and some dizziness. i wonder if there is a connection?

i had the mirena put in 3 months after my daughter was born. the day after i started bleeding heavy. a few days passed it started getting painful and i could feel it i couldnt sit without being un confertable. we were on holidays so i went to the doctors and he couldnt find it i was worried so had an ultrasound it was where it was suppose to b. the doctor said that it should get better and i should make an app with my doc wen i got home. my doc said it was all fine and to give it longer to get better. after 9 months of bleeding non stop, no sex drive, got depression i wouldnt let my husband touch me not even a cuddle i felt so dirty and yucky. my gyno took it out. since i got it out i feel so much better i feel like a woman again. i would not reccomend to any1 to have it put in. it was my last resort of contreception and to help with other bleedinf problems. now i have to have my last baby now so that i can have a historectamy to make me better. sorry i cant spell lol

I would suggest to anyone the Natural Family Planning - Creighton Model system -- VERY easy to learn and do - no pills/hormone changing - abortion, or other harmful side affects. 99% effective (just like any other bc) - simple to do.

Side effects: Stronger relationship/marriage, respect for each others reproductive bodies, kids or no kids (whichever route you want to take), stronger bond with partner.

Im very very happy with this method - Im very intuned to my body now, i KNOW when im fertile!! hahaha I know when Im not. I love this method because for the most/normal part of it - you are only fertile for a short period of time - the rest of the 'month' or cycle, you aren't fertile - so its "have at it!!" time - lol To know we can 'open' sex - without bc/condoms, etc. is the best feeling.

Anywho - I encourage all to at least take a look at it, as another option - even if you still want to use some type of birth control - this is still a good way to learn about your body anyways - then when problems do arise, you will know sooner and being that you keep track of stuff - its even better for your gyn/ob so they can see how your body is 'working' -- all around beneficial.

I've had Mirena for almost three years and had no issues with it. I blead on and off for the first three months but nothing serious and I love mine. I get it checked every year and have had no problems. I have friends that also have it and they have not had any issues. I know everyone is different but I would check with your doc and see what she says. Hopefully it will all work out well for you.

Omg, I got it a year ago this March, and I have anxiety attacks, forgetfulness, headaches and the other day I was actually able to express a tiny bit of fluid from my breast! I wasn't able to do it again, so it's fine now but it really freaked me out! That hasn't happened since I was breastfeeding. I looked it all up online and apparently other people are experiencing the same things as you and I plus more! One girl even said she has to see a cardiologist now about her heart because of the palpitations! I'm considering having it removed at my next appointment, but I'm worried because regardless of the side effects, it so well trusted in preventing pregnancy. It's as reliable as having your tubes tied my doctor told me. When I was on the pill, I was super moody and suspicious of everything, when I was on the shot I had a constant period for 9 months straight! (Not exaggerating, either) And both my breasts were really leaking on that too! I guess I'm just really sensitive to hormones but I'm also scared of switching to something else and getting pregnant again... I'm confused too girl I don't even know what to tell you, you can't trust anything these days. I guess it all comes down to... "What side effects are you willing to accept to prevent pregnancy?"

This MOST definately depends on the person. Everyones body and situations are not the same by far...I have had the mirena for over 3 years and have not had ANY problems @ all. Had some bleeding the first couple of months but it eased away and havent had one in over 3 years. I also questioned whether it was hurting me because of not having one.. I spoke with two different M.D's and they told me in this case, was not unhealthy. You also have to have the same sex partner because different partners is what causes this to react in ways it shouldnt.. Just depends on the person. Could be good for some and bad for others, just don't know which you are until you yourself get it...Love mine.. 5 years and not have to worry about bc is enough said for me. Not uncomfortable @ all. Dont even feel it.

I have been on Mirena for a little over a year and 3 months. I still have a heavy period, my acne is worse than it has been in my life. I am or have gone through everything but the clear discharge and odor. I have cysts. I feel like the acne and heavy period are a trade off for not having another child. My doctor told me that i might be one of the "special" cases and that everything is normal... I have tried all of them but the patch and this one is actually my favorite despite the effects i'm having on it.

To Melissa, irregular periods in the first 3 to 6 months is normal with Mirena. I had the same problem with bleeding. Hubby thought I was internally bleeding and dying because I was bleeding so much, LOL. It only lasted 3 months for me, and now everything is great. I'd wait it out and see what happens. If you are truly concerned, speak to your doctor about it.
