Anyone using Mirena for birth control?

Just wondering if anyone has been experiencing side effects from Mirena? I have been using it for about 3 weeks and I have been feeling the most painful cramps and migranes. It feels like my period is coming on but then all I have is a little spotting. Has anyone else had issues? Is it because its new to my body? Will these things go away?

I didn't experience that, but then again, I never had any of the side effects! My friend got it because of how much I raved about the merina and she had the SAME side effects that you are having! She went to the doc and he said that it was because it was new and after her first period she would be fine....she has had it now for 4 periods and each one has been lighter and less side effects; she almost doesn't even notice her period now!! Hang in there!!

I also used it for 3 years. I loved it and didn't have much problems. I did have some crampy for a week or so, and it turned out that it was sliding up, but no other major problems. I am off of it now though, trying for baby number 3 :)

So did you have to go to the dr. when it was sliding up?  when i find the string, it feels farther up, but i haven't had any problems. do you think i should see the dr?

I had weird side effects for the first few weeks as well. The cramps subsided after a few weeks as well as the bleeding has completly stopped which rocks! The moodiness I never really attributed to the Mirena I just figured it was from just having a baby but that may have been a factor. I still get snappy with my husband everyonce in awhile but it is getting better, the poor man! My doc had told me if the side effects didn't stop within a month it may not have "took". Check with your doc and see if they want to schedual a iud check appointment. Hope this helps!

Hmm I am glad I read this because I thought about going on it, but I tend to react to bc hormones pretty strongly. I was on the pill - Lybrel and for the first 2 months I got really depressed and bled the whole time. After that, I never bled again, but I still got crazy depression every once and a while. So I would be afraid of getting similar side effects with Mirena. On the other hand, it sounds really convenient so I might try it. Its good to know what you're getting in to.

i've had mine for 4 and a half years, the cramps and everything will go away soon, i have had no side effects since. when i have it removed in october, i am going to get another one. it makes things soooo much easier. but if the cramps don't start easing up in the next couple weeks, i'd talk to the dr.

I'm on it and I don't like it much. The good for me does not outweigh the bad. It works in the case that it lightens up the period, but I've found that one month there wont be anything and then the next I get one night that seems heavy then it is spotty for like 2 weeks or so. It is nothing constent enough for me to keep track of. Before I had this I was very regular and it always came at the same time and I would have one heavy day then light for 3 more days and that was it. I have not had cramps so that's been nice. I've been thinking of having it removed and actually having the essure prefomed because we've decided our family is complete. But I'm glad its working out for all of you ladies.

Me too. I thought I was the only one. It's like I am absolutely loving it and just when I think it cannot get any better I burst!!!

Regards to the main question. It really varies by bodies. I did have cramping really bad at first. Now I just get little cramps. I love it though. I am bad at taking the pills and always forgot what day I put the patch on. Everything is hard. I guess if ya don't want any more kids your husband should get a vasectomy. LOL

Hi ladies! I've been using Mirena for about 5months now and I must say I love it! I did have random cramping the first couple of moths but that seems to have stopped. I tend to get crampy once a month which is when I assume my regualr oeriod would be as I don't actually have one anymore, LOVE that part!! I used to have extremely heavy periods and I've had tem since I was 8years old so I so I do not miss that one bit! I have had some irregular bleeding/spotting but my Dr gave me a prescription for low dose birth control pill to wipe that out. I haven't actually had to take any yet as it seems to have finally stopped. My Dr. told me in the beginnig that you really need to give it 6months before your body is fully accustomd to it and you really know what your side effects will be. I've done all the pills the nuva ring and the depo shot but this is by far my favorite. Anything I can't screw up is wonderful!!

I had it for 5 months and had bleeding the whole time, cramping and the feeling like i was going to start my period but just light bleeding for 5 months. I had it taken out, my doctor said my body was reacting to it, that I might be trying to reject it, he said that in a couple of more months it could stop, but I wasn't going to wait. After it was out it all stopped!

All I ever heard was that it was great things, but I never got to enjoy the positive side of it.

I'm also on it and hating it iv'e had it for three months and practically bled the whole time, no cramping though so i spose that is a plus. i'm thinkin of getting mine taken out but everyone sez to leave it a lil longer.

On the better side of things my friend has had it so far for two years and has only had her period twice and for only a few hours. so i supose i agree with Hanako that its just diffrent for everyone some people are just lucky that it works for them.

I have a friend who is about to get hers taken out because she is having break through bleeding quite often, weight gain and dizzy spells. Having said that, contraceptives do different things to different people. What works for some may not work for others.... If you stick with it for a few months and things don't get any better then perhaps try a differet method. Your side effects don't sound unusual at all but I wouldn't say whether it will get better with time. Sorry...

I've had mine for about a year now, and love it. Sometimes I'll get cramps, but when i first got it i was pretty crampy and a slight bleeding for the first few weeks . I get spotting from time to time, but slowly going away less and less everytime.

good to know :) Hopefully it will go away soon... I have also been really moody I guess maybe it is due to the hormones in mirena..

hi, i use the mirena, i must admit i love it! Ur cramping is cos its new, (basically its a foriegn body and ur bodys trying to get rid of it) it should clear up after a few months at the absolute tops, and for the 1st yr ur periods may be a bit funny, i come on every few months roughly for a couple of days really light, after the 1st yr to 18 months it can stop them completley! i personally quite like that part, also the fact its in, for the nxt 5 yrs (or 4 now as its been in a year) i don't have to worry bout getting pregnant!
