My son is 8 weeks old and I was induced and got an epidural. Sometimes when I bend over the tub to give him a bath or change his diaper on the couch, when I straighten up or stand up sometimes my lower back hurts and I have to take a minute before it goes away. It doesn't do it all the time but is this normal??

20months later if i push on the epidural spot it still hurts i also can feel a little bump where they put it in
but back to your question yes i believe its normal i still have the pain

[edit 4 years later lol: its 5 (almost 6!) years later and it STILL hurts when i put pressure on the spot where the epidural was put in... I can point out the exact spot still because of pain.]

I have three kids, 8, 5, and 3 and still have backaches from time to time. I also have bad posture which doesn't help, but when I slouch it relieves the pain ironically. Hope things get better for you

oh yes. my son is 10 months and i still feel it sometimes. if the weather changes suddenly, if i'm in one position for too long, you name it, it can bring on the pain.

My doctor said that the pain in my back was more likely the constant carrying of my child. I did get the epidural but my doctor said that when you are pregnant there is a constant strain on your back then when the child is born you begin to hold and carry more that you did before and the combination of being pulled one way for so long then being pulled another can cause back pain.

I had an epidural, but thankfully my dad is a chiroprator. It is very normal to have lower back and even hip pain after a birth. Just think of everything your body just went through. Your pelvis had to open and that causes a chain reaction. Yoga is a great way to stretch and strenghten your body. Plus, you can do it with baby!

Oh yes, it is completely normal and I totally understand...I had an epidural too...and at first even I had trouble bending down and doing things...it especially hurt, as you said, bending down to give my daughter a bath, breastfeeding in the wrong position and so on...but try keeping good posture...it will help in the long run...Your son is young, so try keeping the bath tub on the bathroom counter, so you dont have to bend down...

I had an epidural with my first and I will never do that again. They put the needle in too far and it caused an air bubble and gave me spinal head aches. It started out hurting how you are explaining then it got so bad I couldn't move so I went back to the hospital. Yours must not be that or it seems it would have gotten worse by now. Good Luck I hope it gets better for you!

I had an epidural 10 weeks ago with my first baby. I have had no back pain or anything but when I actually got the epidural the doctor warned me that I could suffer from back aches for a few weeks afterwards so I believe this is quite normal but if you are worried give your doctor a call.

ever since i had my first 9 years ago, i get pain shooting through my lower right back. Its the sciatic nerve... not really much to be done except pain meds (tho if youre breastfeeding you want to avoid this too much) and heating pads... Its cuz if you do too much, especially lifting, the muscles around the nerve get swollen and press on it. Im not sure if it has anything to do with the epidural (i had one also) or just the way the baby came out... talk to your dr. for any specific ideas they may have, but im sitting 9 yrs later with the same thing... good luck!!

i had one and my lower back hurts too. i had my daughter 7 weeks ago. but also, i had a previous back injury. so, i'm kind of use to backpain... but i agree with christine, it doesnt hurt to go see a doctor if your worried about it,
like everyone always say, theres no such thing as a stuipd question.

yes it happens,i had to go to therapy for them to stretch and straighten my back out, my son came out head and 1 arm first and my epidural only numbed from my knees to my ankles so u know i was in some extreme pain and labored 2 1/2 days.

I'm not sure if its normal. I had one but I wasn't induced. I have lower back issues. It's not bad. It's like my muscles are tired after a workout. I'm thinking about seeing a chiropractor just to get my back aligned right. If you're not in major pain it's probably fine but if you feel it might be something serious don't think twice about putting off a doctor visit. Better safe than sorry.
Hope you feel better soon.

My daughter is 17 months and I too got the epidural and the back pains. I also got a twinge if I turn my head at a certain angle.... it goes away to an extent and the pain lessens eventually.

My son his just over 7 months old, and my back pain just stopped. It was never that bad, but when I would bend over it would take a moment to go away. Don't worry...hopefully soon it will go away all together.

I was also induced and had an epidural too, and yes it's normal...it takes a little while for your back to feel 100% again. I took Motrin, it helped a lot... that and a nice warm bubble bath if you can.

Yes, I had that as well with the epidural. My son is going to be 5 and I sometimes still get that feeling, every once in a while. also when i am outside and my back gets cold that spot always stiffins up a bit.

Hey there. I had an epidural and c section and i think that pain is normal. I am still getting backaches and my son is 8 weeks. It could also partly be the lifting of your child constantly, and breastfeeding if you do so. Dont stress to much.

My son is now almost 5 weeks. I was induced and had an epidural TWICE.The first time they didnt do it right and I was having bad contractions and in unbearable pain. Then they redid it. And when they did it I guess it is a natural reaction and I jerked back. I think thats why my back hurts. the past two days its been a little better. My dr says it can hurt up to months.

i go through the same thing too..i had one, it was very painful for me to get. and i think that it just might be that they hit a nerve or something when giving it to me. just ask your doc.

[deleted account]

Omg! Getting an epidural was the worst thing I ever thought about doing! Instead of 2nd guessing going natural..I should have been 2nd guessing getting an epidural! I didn't deal with the back pains but I heard that it is normal and it sometimes last almost 2 years after birth, normally around the time that your whole body starts to regulate it's self after carrying and giving birth!

I had back pain for so long after I got an epidural with my son. he is 14 months now and it doesn't bother me anymore so I guess it went away. I couldn't bend over or barely lay on my back. I hope the pain gets better for you too

The same thing happend to me... I never asked a doctor what was wrong.. Try streaching a few times out of the day, it seemed to help my bck.. Another thing when i would bend over the tub or sit down it would feel like my vagina was gonna tear... Is that normal?

I havent had my child yet, but considering what I do know about how an epidural works, and where the needle has to go, and the amount of time it's in your back, the pain youre feeling seems normal seeing as after a norma IV in your hand/arm, you can be bruised or sore in that spot after the IV is taken out.
Like others have said, if it really bothers you ask your doctor about it, just to be on the safe side. But from what I've read it does seem pretty normal to be sore in that spot afterwards for a while.

I had this same problem and thought maybe it was because of my epidural too- since I had SO many problems with it. But I asked my doctor and she said that it was just my hips and stuff moving back into place.

hi i had a epidural with my first daughter i have to say this is normal and the pain does go way with time am just so glad that i didn't have one with my second daughter well the midwife didn't believe that i was having my second daughter so i ended up having her at home if it wasnt for my sister i dont think my daughter would be her now shes 1

[deleted account]

I had one on my first and yes it took a few months for my back to get back to normal and i had to do exercises to strengthen my back up and make sure i always had good posture when sitting and walking etc.My back was perfect and 4 years after my first child i had my second and not one bit of back pain etc during the pregnancy which i had on my first and i had a spinal for my emergency section due to the epidural not working the first time so the opted for the spinal.I had a very sore back for a day or to and after that all good.I am lucky as many moms will always experience back pain forever after an epidural and it can depend on how the insert it and if its not done properly you will have problems, its not without its side effects,it is a risk.
