Hi Moms,

I wanted to share my story with you hopefully it will help son was born 5 weeks early and spent 5 weeks in the NICU - he was on a TPN for about 3 weeks (he had surgery on his intestines so full time for 3 weeks) a side effect of the TPN is that it is really hard on the liver and throws the Bilirubin way off - because of this he has been on 0.5mL of Actigall (urdisiol) twice a day for 9 weeks. He has also been diagnosed with reflux and was put on 0.5mL of Zantac twice a day - His reflux kept getting worse and worse - I'm talking we were going through an outfit per bottle - I called the doc thinking that his Zantac needed to be increased but it goes by weight so I would have to wait for an appt and bring him in - meanwhile he had run out of Actigall and the pharmacy needed authorization to refill - it took them a couple of days well guess what he hasnt spit up/vomited/had indegestion or gas in three days since he has been off of the Actigall - I did some reseach and learned that the SIDE EFFECTS of Actigall are the SYMPTOMS of REFLUX!!!! It also said that antacids will hinder the absorbtion of the Actigall. When I was explaining what I had discovered to the doctor he looked at me total 'deer in the headlights' and said 'HUH'...he went to his little medical journals and confirmed what I told him...go figure...gotta love the internet...So the doctor has taken him off the Actigall and is checking his Bili levels to make sure they are good and hopefully this "reflux" is gone for good - so if your baby is on any medications check the side effects -if that helps anyone else i would love to hear - Good luck to all!!

That's a great warning. My friend's son was diagnosed with reflux around 9-10 months and has been on meds since. Even though he doesn't get sick anymore he's still on meds. They took him off one med and then they'll take him off the other one in a few months. I'll have to ask what he's on and give her this heads up.
