I have noticed my one month old will start whimpering in his sleep a lot more after about 4am. He gets his night feeds (drinks half the quantity per feed during the day), air-condition temperature ok, pampers not terribly wet. He has a little chesty phlegm but I am not sure if it's because of that or nightmares.

could be that he is gassy, or nightmares. my son has had nightmares since he was 3 weeks old. just hold his hand and let him know that you're right there next to him, that you're watching him and that everything is alright. that usually works. plus you could give him something to hug to himself, like a small blanket or a clean spit rag. it can be used as a security blanket. if you've ever heard of those little singing blow worms, you can get one of those and play the music, it could calm him down as well. there are many things to calm a child with nightmares down. try those out, if they don't work you should ask your son's doctor.

does it go on for long. id say hes just dreaming. all my 3 children made whimpering noises in there sleep and would screw up their eyes when doing it, wouldnt last long. usually quietly "shhh"ing them they would settle down.
