Bottle Breaking

I'm just wondering how to break my one year old daughter from her bottle. I've made the mistake of giving it to her at bedtime. My mother in law has two girls under three and she broke them from bottles at bed to cups at bed. I don't really want to do that because then you have to worry about breaking the bedtime cup or suffer the consequences with potty training. I'm not sure where to start?

I've recently done this with my son.

Instead of giving him something to take to bed, I gave him a cup of milk before bed, while sitting in a chair in his bedroom so that he associates having the milk with bed. This may not work for you if your daughter does not fall asleep without the bottle, so in that case you will have to try methods to teach her to self soothe. There are heaps of really good ones to try on the internet and in books, the one we use and that I highly recommend was designed by a woman called Tracy Hogg, who calls herself the Baby Whisperer.

If she wakes during the night and you think she is thirsty, instead of giving her a bottle just giver her some water. She will quickly learn that it's not worth waking up for. In the meantime, just continue using whatever method you choose to self soothe her.

It's not easy to do, but it really doesn't take too long, and it will be much easier to do it now rather then waiting til she's older! Good luck xx
