What are some names you know of that have switched popularity from male to female?

IMHO Johnny or James are still boys names even if a handful of girls is named them.

I can think of some boys' names that have COMPLETELY switched to girls' names. Makes me sad that I can't think of them as boys' names at all and it would be strange to name a boy these names.

Lynn

Ashleigh or Ashley

Kelly

Shannon

Courtney (only after 1956 when a popular book had a girl named Courtney -- before it was all boys)

Darcy

Brooke

Dana

Jody

Lane

Tracy

It's because boys are still considered better than girls, so a girl named a boys name is a step up, but a boy named a girls name is a step down. It's quite sexist, but sadly true. Same with clothes, girls can wear boys clothes, but boys can't wear girls clothes.

Avery, my daughters name is Avery. When making an apt for her they always ask how old "he" is.

according to babynames.com James and Brett are unisex names. if i ever have a girl I would like to call her Joe (short for her name Josephine). i know two guys named Kim and two named Kelly. I had a roommate in Texas who was named after her grandfather but they spelled her name Thomi. I also had another friend while stationed in Texas who's daughter's name is Chesney and a guy I used to work with who's daughter's name is Kennedy; both girls are named after the obvious (Kenny and the former President).

I have a nieces named Jacksen Emersen and Paysen Reese. My daughter's name is Kynlie Eryn...variations on Kenley/Kinley, which means king of the meadow or the king's meadow and Erin, which is we as American's think is a girl's name, but is traditionally a boy's name in Ireland. I have a few girlfriends named Austin. I intend to name my next child (if it ever happens) a name that can go either way. I think boys names for girls are fine...I mean id have rather had a boys name thanRonna in order to be named after my dad Ron...people are forever saying it w/a long o and when I correct them they call me Ronda...blah!

Boys names I like for girls:

Brennen

Langston

Lennox

Langley

Kolton

Killian

Braylen

Asher

My sister had friends ay school that were spencer and tyler, both girls. Tyler I could vaguely see the girl, although my son is tyler, but spencer? No that was definitely a boys name to me I've also heard brodie, bailey, caden, christian, lee, kelly... All originally boys names. I've also heard boys named kylie too.

Personally my daughters middle name is Ryan. I think its great for a girl or boy. But my daughter is named after her dads very good friend that way killed in a car wreck in high school. Her first name is Danielle so sometimes its a little tough when people dont take the time to read the name they r saying and just assume a child is a boy without paying attention to the name. She loves her name and loves where it came from so thats all that is important to me!!!!!

Technically, my name was originally a boy's name - Carrie... and I named my daughter Rylee... I grew up with a girl names Rhyan (Ryan). She is actually very beautiful and the name fits her. But some others are Corey, Addison, Madison, Ryan, Riley, Stacy, Cameron, ... there are soooo many! I can't think of all of them

oh dear, this stuff is so ridiculous. People are so obsessed with gender! its crazy! I have a little girl named Phoenix - because me and my husband loved the name and decided when i was pregnant that it would be the baby's name if it was a boy or a girl. Biological sex differences are real - gender differences are created by culture and society. A name is just a name - boy girl whatever - if you think it sounds good and you like it who cares. Its just letters and sounds!

My daughter is Kadence, but I never heard of that for a boy. The names Lindsey and Ashley were traditionally boys names but now used for girls. I went to high school with a male Lindsey

@Hannah, my daughter's name is Caden too. I had no idea it was a boys name when she was born, it sounded very feminine to me when I first heard it.. I wonder if she'll be ticked when she goes to school and meets all kind of boys named Caden??

Lol, thats funny, and sad too, if you spell it the boy way expect people to say it that way! I know of a Deborah, but she says it deb-BOR-uh........ridiculous.

It was actually spelled Zachariah. I said it the usual boy way and I was met with a six year old attitude, "Um, it is za-CAR-ee-uh."

Oh I know of a girl named Za'Kariah, that's easier to know it's a girl when you spell it differently!

Cory/Corey was originally a boys name but the girl version Cori/Corrie/Kori came from the name Corine. My mom actually named me Cori after my great aunt, Corinthia. Just throwing it out there that I've actually known a lot more girls named Cori/Corrie/Kori than boys named Corey/Cory.

In the baby book I chose Blake for my son and it can be used as a female name as well I have heard one i believe actress name is Blake . I have never really thought of Blake as a hirls name. I am open to the unisex names if they sound indifferent but not like kelly or shannon

My daughter's name is Kayden, everyone I have talked to since I was pregnant with her said they thought it was a boys name. Sounds like a girl to me...

My sister's little girl is Bailey. I'm not one for unisex names though, preferring names that you automatically know the gender of the person. My son is Zack Thomas and I'm sure (hopefully!) that I won't meet a little girl named Zack :)

and hey, one of my best friends growing up was named Ryan (pronounced the same way too) and I'm 30, so that one's been flipped back and forth for a while now LOL
