Breast Preference?

My 3 1/2 month old son won't take my left side lately. I start him on the left because it's much smaller than the right, and produces less, so I'm trying to get him to balance it out. It doesn't feel sore or like anything it wrong with it. I hold him the same way no matter which side I feed him on, so I'm very confused as to what is going on. Has anyone else had this problem? Also somtimes when it's time for him to eat, and he acts hungery, he just wants to sit and smile at me and won't eat at all. How often did your guys 3-4 month olds eat? And how many oz?

My left side is smaller than my right too! So far my daughter has not had a problem liking one side over the other unless the left is pretty empty she won't even bother with it. You may want to try a different nursing position. I know if my daughter is too frantic she will not latch on so I have to calm her down a bit and then she will eat. If you are really concerned about the size difference you could always pump the left, especially if he doesn't eat on that side at a feeding so it will increase your production. It also may be the opposite problem that the right is over producing and the left is just fine.
I hope that helps a little.

My son also prefered the right side and I noticed the way I would hold him was the problem. I though I was holding him the same way on both sides, with him at the right breast with his feet facing the left breast, and on the left with feet facing the right. It's not the same, he was backward in that position. So I tried holding him at the left breast with his feet almost behind my back like a football and it worked, also laying on my right side with him laying next to me and tilting forward to feed him from the left breast worked also. It was like he only liked to feed when he was on his left side. I hope some of these tricks work if you haven't tried them yet.
He would eat every 2 hours the first 3mths then about every 3 hours till about 5mths and sometimes would only eat for a few min's then just lay there and other times would nurse for 30-40mins and I always found it hard to keep track of the oz's I would just feed him when I thought he was hungry.
I hope this helps

Yep, it is normal for them to have a preference. Mine prefers the left side. He's 10 months old, and over time he became better at nursing from both sides, but to be honest, I'm still a bit lop-sided. Refusal to nurse on one side could possibly be due to thrush or an ear infection, but if he seems perfectly happy that very likely isn't the case.

As for how much they eat, it really varies. But babies are very good at regulating their food intake, and eating when - and only when - they are hungry. If you're letting him nurse on demand, then you're doing just fine. I think when my son was that age, he was eating around ever 2 1/2 to 3 hours, and he'd also cluster feed in the evenings. Nursing sessions were usually around 10 or 15 minutes, but I'm not sure how many oz he was taking at a time.

I actually had that problem with my son. He prefered the right to the left. In order to get him to take the left was just a game of patience and who would break first. And yes sometimes he would act like he was starved to death but when i went to feed him he would go to sleep.or just get really calm. Every 1 1/2 to 2 hours he eat all the time and only would eat one side at a time.
