i am 25 years old i have 1 son who is 6 and currently expecting my new baby on november 27th, 2009 via c section, i had my first son via emergency c section and was put out with general anastetic, this time i was told i am going to be awake with the epidural/spinal block, my issue is being awake for this procedure scares the poo outta me, i may not be able to see what their doing but i KNOW what their doing and everytime i think about having to be awake for this i have a panic attack and drive my blood pressure up i do not want to be awake and i know its awful to feel this way but i really dont want to be awake for the surgery, any suggestions or people who have been awake for the c section any advice? how it felt? how you felt?

I had a planned c-section and i was extremely nervous about it. The part i really hated was getting the spinal block because they made my boyfriend leave for it, but after about 5 minutes of laying on the table i asked when they were going to start and they told me they already did. I started feeling sick so they gave me oxygen and that seemed to help .. before i new it my baby was out and crying .. the next few days was a killer! .. i am actually still numb around the cut and my son is 13 months

F.Y.I im not sure what the pain medication is that they sent me home with BUT after a week being home i got constipated and it was the worst so i stopped taking it but the nurse told me if i were to have taken stool softners that wouldnt have happened!

GOOD LUCK!

i saw my ob/gyn yesterday and we talked a bit about the c section, he would really like my to be awake because the general anastetic not only affects me but also the baby. i also told him my fears of being awake, one fear is he starts cutting before im numb, or that well ive heard from friends and family and on here the epidural sometimes u can feel more then you want or only numbs a certain part if its not put in correctly, and i didnt want him getting cut happy, he assured me the anesthesiologist would not let him cut before i was totallly numb ( and by the way i am aware im being completely irrational), he also informed me i would be getting a spinal block not an epidural as the spinal block apparently takes affect quicker, and lets you feel virtually nothing but pressure, or so they say. one reason i am looking forward to being awake is any surgery ive had using general anastetic ive always felt so nauseaus afterwards, and im hoping i wont feel as sick to my stomach afterwards with just the spinal cuz well lets face it with a c section its not fun to throw up. and when i had my emergency c section with my first child, everything was so rushed because i had pre eclampsia and my kidneys were failing and my blood pressure was so high i was at risk for a heart attack, i wasnt really told anything, i spent 3 days in hospital on bedrest, bloodpressure meds, migraines, i had to have a cranky nurse sit with me 24hrs of the day unless i had visitors to make sure i wasnt going to die, threw up for 3 days no sleep i was a bit of a mess when the dr came in at 11pm and said your to sick were gettin that baby out now to save both your lives, and then it was a madhouse .. one sec i was in my room with my hubby ,next min im wheeled down to the operating room and they put an epidural in then but they said this would be a lot faster if we knocked you out, i agreed and bam woke up like 2hrs later with a new baby it was soooo traumatic for me and i think thats whats freaking me out a bit to, i have this big evil idea about c sections now cuz my first one saved my life yes but in saving it they traumatized me... this time around i have a new ob//gyn one that i like alot he's so nice, execellent bedside manner, takes great care of me, and talks to me and tells me whats going on where the ob/gyn i had back for my first son was kinda an ass, so that is helping ,my new ob/gyn makes me feel very comfortable and even when he's doing a pelvic examine if i say owe he'll stop ask me if im ok and make sure im ready before he continues, he always likes to talk why he works and i love that fact about him becuase i can see him on the c section day talking to me about the most random things and that makes me feel better, and at least being awake my hubby can come in with me and even though he wants to stand by my head and video tape it, just him being there makes me feel better as well, and the fact this time i will be one of the first ones to see my baby girl and give her kisses where as being knocked out i was the last one to see my son, and then the worry starts again for me, what if something happens to me on the table or happens to my baby girl do i wanna be awake for it? i know when im back in my hospital bed with my new daughter after being awake for my c section ima be thankful i did it and that i was just worried over everything for nothing, and that helps to calm me, i just need to suck it up and be a big girl i guess lol

I was awake for both of my C Sections... The doctors and nurses talked to me and told myself and my husband what they were doing and why... I felt nothing until it was over the epi was wearing off.. The only thing that I did feel was extremely cold/chills which is normal.

i had a c section and was awake i was scared to start but got my epidural and was numb from the boobs down but once i got in there i relized that i would see her soon and the second thing they asked if i felt anything and all i felt was like they were pushing lightly on me but my doctor talkd to the nurse about what they were goingto do that weekend so i never know what they were doing till my husband told me and then the doctor told me just after he puled her out that i had a baby girl other than that you have no idea whats going on if you have a nice doctor

I had an epidural and general anestesthia for my c-section. It was unplanned but after a day and a half of labor with no major progress, it was the only choice. I felt numb from the chest down. Did not feel the initial cut or the stiches/staples. The only thing I felt was a bit of pressure when they pulled him out. Even though you know what they're doing your so focused and excited for the baby to finally arrive that you don't think about it (I hope that made sense). Total time was 45 minutes. That includes prep work and post baby clean-up. I was back in my room before I knew it! Good luck and congrats.

i had an emergency c-section with a spinal block and only felt the dr push him out, it was only pressure. I was terrified too and it was not painful at all.

I was nervous when I had mine csection with my second child, but that was only cos I wasn't told much about what was going to happen, all I had was all the cons to having one rolling around in my head which made me even more nervous, but after I had the spinal yes I was still nervous which made my blood pressure rise a bit but everyone in that room was nice and spoke to me about allsorts to keep my mind off it and in no time Michaela arrived and I wasn't so nervous then. It also helped that my partner was with me too.

As for the awake part, my consultant asked me what I'd prefer whether I'd prefer to be sleeping or awake so maybe you should go and talk to your OB/GYN and see what they have to say, tell them about your fears they might be able to suggest something for you!

Hope it all goes ok for you

i had an emergancy c-section with my son 5th sept 07 and i had a spinal block.

i didnt feel any pain at all, i did fell them trying to get my sons big head out of the little cut they made, then them pushing on my belly to help push my sons body out (i felt like i was going to be sick coz my stomach went from being up high to all of a sudden falling to where it normally should be), next thig my baby was crying, i was crying any my SO was crying too. it was the most amazing experiance.

if your worried talk to your OB/GYN they will be able to help you with your fears
