my so. has just turned 1, he was bought a pair of hard bottom trainers for his birthday but I'm not sure if he can wear them yet, he's not yet walking but is standing independently. Can anyone clear this up for me?!

I've been told by the doctor that it's best to have them in soft sole shoes to strengthen foot muscles and aid in developing balance.  Hard sole do all the work for them so they shouldn't be used all of the time.  I ended up combining.  When we were at home or at my parents place/relatives house, my son wore robeez or bare feet (with socks).  When we were out, he wore light weight shoes with a hard sole (I found that heavy soled shoes made it difficult for him to walk) because I was afraid of him stepping on something, not to mention how dirty public places like the mall can be.  Hope this helps!

I work in a nursery and in our under two room alot of the kids wear hard soled shoes when they are either walking or learning to walk so your little one will be fine.

My son wore Converse as soon as he could walk, 9.5 months, and has always had hardsoled shoes since then. As long as the shoes aren't stiff and bend with your son's foot when he moves there shouldn't be a problem. My son is 2 now and we haven't had any issues. Don't forget to let him go barefoot too as often as possible!

My doctor told me not to use hard soles until my son is walking. So if your child is walking, it should be fine. He needs the extra support.

Hi! They say not to put them in hard soles as they need to strengthen the muscles in thier feet!! My little boy started walking at 10 1/2 months....he took his fist steps about a month before in hard-soled shoes which i put on him to play down stairs!! He had/has a slightly turned-in foot so couldnt really stand straight on it.  With the hard soles, they kind of helped to straighten his foot to the ground. I let him wear them while he was learning to walk and if we when out......otherwise he wears barefeet! So i reckon that as long as you allow him to walk around barefoot as well it should be fine!! :)

If your son is walking, there is no reason that he can't and shouldnt be in hard soled shoes. My son started walking at 10 months and was always in hard soled shoes...in fact I never remember a time when he was in soft shoes while walking. So, yes, he can wear regular shoes, it won't be a problem=]
