HI all, My 13mth old daughter has a problem with lumpy foods. She will gag and choke until she is sick. She has no problem with finger foods but trying to feed her anything else with even the slightest lump in is a challange. Does anyone else have this problem? Does anyone have any ideas on how to overcome it?

Just to clarify- she doesn't like pureed food with texture, right? If so, instead of feeding her lumpy sweet potatoes give her a steamed and cooled sweet potato that she can pick up and chew herself. She doesn't have to be fed by a spoon.

Quoting Misty:

What kinds of lumpy foods, like mac and cheese or mashed potatoes. I don't have much advise other than maybe she just isn't ready yet or try really really small bites. I remember my kids gaging with certain foods, but that eventually passed. I wouldn't give up trying to give them to her they say sometimes it takes 11 times of introducing something to your child before they will either try it or like it. My daughter hated carrots but now she likes them cause I just kept on giving them to her.

She loves mashed potato if it is smooth, but if you give her anything with the slightest lump (peas, pasta etc) she then gags.  We have been trying for a few months now.  I will keep going with finger food and try different things there and see how she goes.

Thankyou both for replying :-)

Yes that is right, she loves her pureed vegies but once you start giving her anything slighly lumpy she gags and chokes.  We have been trying on and off for 3-4mths with no improvement.  I did think about just giving her things to pick up and eat herself but wasn't sure if she would be getting enough out of it.  I think we will give it a go and see how we go then we can sit and eat as a family.
