how much is to much when it comes to gifts? how many gifts do you buy your kids including the Santa gifts?
Has anyone ever bought things like second hand books or toys as xmas gifts? do you think this is ok?

We do 1 large family gift (last year was a piano which we got for free and this year we are getting a telescope), a couple cheap gifts for all the kids to share (like board games or puzzles) and 1 individual gift that I make by hand (like dresses, blankets, knitted stuffed toys, etc.)
We spend no more than $200 total on all 5 people.

As a single working mother I have nver been able to give my kids every item they want for Christmas. They have never noticed. Kids only learn what they know. If you spoil them from the get go you can expect that they will maintain that attitude. As far as new or second hand gifts, I think that really depends on your situation. Remember that being stressed about making the bills and gifts all in one month doesn't make for a very happy atmosphere at home and over the years its that "feeling " around Christmas that they remember. Not the gifts.

I gave birth a few days before Christmas, so I didn't get to enjoy that much the occasion last year. Hope to do better this year. Gifts? Haven't thought of any yet... but I probably buy loads of toys for my little one. Not certain of the buget at the moment too... let's see how things go for the months to come.

my kids dont really play with toys dont get me wrong i do get them toys but they like to play with simple stuff like spoons in sand so i dont really spend that much on them at christmas i try to get one thing that they really want although they are 4 and 21 months but we go thru the xmas catalogue and my oldest shows me things she likes and i get something that i think my youngest would like and after that we just get things at the dollar store like bracellets and little nic nacs that i know they will enjoy more then something really big and expensive

Hon you have 6 kids! Second hand is great look on ebay and and all those other sites. Second hand shop stuff can be painted, or covered in plastic dureseal (book cover) i do chriscos toys which i pay a certain amount every week for like 5 months and order stuff from the catalogue. i also get her b-day present with that as well. But i only have ONE child. I would suggest 1 main present each (new) inexpensive, then do second hand, $1.00 shop stuff for the rest. Age appropriate. Good Luck!!

We buy each child $40 worth of toys. So what and how many they get depends on that. At the same time I know my parents and DHs parents spend a couple hundred on each kid so I dont see the point in buying a ton of stuff.

I dont see a problem buying 2nd hand as long as it is good shape. Bikes are great to buy 2nd hand.

wow! sounds like the majority is pretty strict when it comes to Christmas. I just cant make myself do it. I want to spend less and teach my kids the value in giving not receiving but I just love to see their faces light up on Christmas morning. they do not get gifts from family because the family is far away and they have not seen much of them. I am thinking of trying to find second hand books this year and a few small items. I hope my kids are not disappointed.

hi there.

to be honest with you, this year i am totally unprepared, as i am having a baby 1st week in december. (okay by section) so i have 3 other children, and normally spend about €30 on each of them. that does not include clothing though. thing is even if i spend alot of money on them, they don't understand the meaning of value of money (yet anyway!) so and where i come from we don't have a large income, so i make the best of it. however, i don't know how i will do it this year because of the new arrival.

but the most important thing is the feeling they will get and not the value of the gifts. good luck.

Hmmm, this is Amelia's first christmas and even though we said we weren't going to go mad, i've already bought her so much stuff! Im terrible, i see comething and can't resist even though i know she wont appreciate it and will just play with the packaging! We will probably calm down once the first crimbo and birthday is out of the way as i do want her to understand the value of money etc but she's definately going to be spoiled rotton this year!

We normally get the kids one or two things because they get tonnes off the grandparents and relatives. I wouldn't rule out second hand stuff if I saw it and it was what we were looking for. I want to try and teach my children the real priniciples behind christmas rather than it all be about the presents but on the other hand I don't want them to feel that they never had anything when they grow up.
