My son has been shivering in a way, I'm not sure how to describe it but it worries me because its almost like a seizure. It only lasts a second and it does not seem to bother him. He is 8 months old and I am making an apt. to see the doctor.

It may just be a cold chill, just like what we would get, but if you are concerned about it I would definetly ask you pediatrition! I know my girls used to get little cold shivers, I thought it was cute. One sign that is could be a seizure would be if he looked lathargic afterwards or a blank look as if he were staring off in space!

Hi Ariel,

I myself do not have experience with this, however, my cousin has been going through this with her daughter for the past month or so. What she was told is that these are called "Baby Shudders". A baby is liable to start getting them at about 4 months and can have them all the way up to 5 years and when they do have the shudders that they can have up to around 100 a day that last about 5-30 seconds at a time. This is the conclusion that they came up with...AFTER...going through the doctor and making sure that it was and is not something serious...like a seizure!! She had to go for an EEG to make she that everything is okay with her. My cousin was then told about these baby shudders, again, after ruling out something more serious. The doctors have told her that they are not anything to worry about, that they have no effect on the little ones. That is all I know. Make sure you take your son to the doctor though and rule out anything else!!! If you want more info you can I ask my cousin to contact you through here!

My daughter has been suffering from these symptoms since she was born.
She is now 4 years old and about to start school.
We have been to the doctor several times who told us that its nothing to worry about that she would grow out of it or learn to adapt to it, her nursery put her into the special education list for a while and had someone come do some work with her and they could not diagnose or say.
In the last 6 months ago its become more prominent and it effects her quite a bit - scary if you havent seen her do it before.
Sorry no answers but if it's the same as our symptoms it wont just be restricted to being a baby

Hi Ariel, I am so glad that you already got in to see the doctor! Please tell me that the doctor has made arrangements for other tests though?? I really hope that he/she is not just getting you to monitor and then go from there...if that is what the doctor said I would definitely be fighting for some tests. You need to rule out seizures and other stuff for certain. I am sure that everything is fine, that it is only the baby shudders, but you cannot be too sure.

As for the baby shudders themselves, I have told my cousin this as well, I am not sure if I totally agree with what the docs say about them. Naomi (cousins daughter) is having up to 50 a day lasting about 15 seconds each. I personally, do not feel that that kind of thing would have no effect on them at all. I also find it odd that if you try to look up Baby Shudders on the internet or anything there is nothing medical about them, The only thing you will find is the exact question you originally posted...just some things to think about. I am sure all is and will be fine! Good luck!

Thanks Janel, I took my son took the doctor yesterday and it was exactly that, baby shudders. I am just supposed to look for certain things to make sure that is most definently the case. The doctor asked me to write down when it happens and how long but he should be just fine.

My niece used to have little siezures as a baby - but you could tell it was a siezure because her eyes glazed over. Fortunately they have stopped on their own. Its going to be something difficult for the doctor to deal with without seeing it though...but Id still get it checked out
