Me and my two year old son is on the elevator, I have at least five bags in my hand. When getting off my son throws a fit and won't get off the elevator with me and suddenly pushes the button to go down. I'm left off the elevator and he's left on. Do you agree with my relative when she says I'm a unfit parent?

You need to be a little more strick on your child not saying to beat the hell out of them but he needs to know where you stand. Thats why he does whatever he wants to do because you are excepting these things from him. My son was 2 years at the time we went to the store he told me he wanted this toy I told we will not get it today because I dont have money right now. He was soo upset he left the store in a rage and bang his head on the concret. I pick his ASS up and spanked him and I was talking to him at the sametime so he knows why he was spanked. I tell you what...he is 5 now and he has the most up most respect to me and everyone else. Let me tell you something sister you have to start off when they are young if not they are going to walk all over you. I wish the best for you and your child. God Bless!

If you were an unfit mother...then you would have said TO HELL WITH HIM!!! You made the effort at running after him...and made sure he was safe!

Sometimes at the library my boys will get too worked up at just stepping over the threshold to get out of the elevator. I always make sure they get out first if they do not we just stay on and push the floor number again.

Well, my thought would be if the leash were attached to you and the kid and you walked out of the elevator the kid would kind of have to follow?

Oh, honey don't worry about it. All moms go through this kind of stuff. Mine never pushed an elevator button but ran through a door at the doctor's office and locked it. I was so embarrassed and yes, she was in BIG TIME trouble. Your mom probably did the same things when you were itty bitty and just doesn't want to confess. ;)

Things could have been so much worse. It's good your sister was there to catch him and that you were all there to deal with the issue. However, I would have told my mother to shove it if she had called me an unfit parent. But I have a special relationship with my mom. ;)

Your not unfit, but forget what Kate said about the teddy bear leash,no offense to Kate but just think of what could of happened if you had that leash and it was tangled up in your hands and connected to your child..........

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ask her what she would do! I probably would have been in shock...and probably would have left him on that elevator also...not intentionally.

This in no way makes you an "unfit" parent... Its called Terrible Toddler years lol! This happened to me with my oldest daughter when she was 3. i took off running down the stairs at the bank and made it as the doors were opening! i was freaked out and you bet she got into trouble but its "typical kid stunts"! dont beat yourself up about it!

Uhm, I wouldn't say you're an unfit parent. Stressed and encumbered, yes. Maybe next time bring a stroller with you? Or get a teddy bear leash (there's another thread on it you can look at). If this is the only incident then no, not unfit. However I would like to know what happened after those elevator doors closed. Did you run down the stairs after him or call a security guard or anything?
