I am thinking about getting mirena in the next week. And all i keep reading is horror stories. However my doctor said it was safe and effective. I guess i just really dont know and wanted to see if any other mothers out there have mirena or have used it and what your experiences were, the good or the bad. thank you!

I've had the Mirena since April of last year & I LOVE it!! I had spotting for a couple weeks after, but since then haven't had a cycle whatsoever...which is great! I work in an OB/GYN office & this is by far the most popular birth control method in our office...it's highly recommended by our providers. Everyone has to understand there are risks & chances that it's not going to work perfectly for them, but that goes for every type of birth control out there. They do say Mirena is more effective then a tubal ligation, but it's not permanent, so if you want to add to your family you always have that option. If you decide on getting it, just make sure you read the pamphlet from your provider because it'll have lots of helpful information in it, so you don't have to freak out & call your doctor.

I have had a copper IUD for about 7 years now. It does not contain hormones so it is good for up to 10 years. The IUD with progesterone is good for 5 years. Everyone is different and their specific needs are different. Speak with your doctor about which one is best for you. I chose the more 'natural' route which actually works out because it's effectiveness lasts twice as long. You can get it removed anytime so if you ever decide you want to conceive or it's just not working out for you for whatever reason then your doctor can remove it just as easily as he/she inserted the device.

As far as my personal experience - it has been fantastic! When the IUD is inserted your doctor would prefer that you are on your period so that your cervix is dilated for an easier placement of the device. I was not on my period so it was a bit painful - however I did not get a local anesthetic to numb the area which they do on a regular basis now. Afterward I had some cramping with slight bleeding for a day or two but tylenol and motrin helped with that. I have a friend that had one placed about 2 months ago and she said her experience was easy and almost painless.

Since it's placement, my periods are more regular but heavier than they used to be. I have never had a pregnancy while using the IUD so it's been 100% effective against pregnancy which was the reason I got it along with regulating my periods.

http://www.mirena-us.com/ Here is the website for the mirena however you should research your other options too. Mirena is not the only IUD available.

Good luck.

Hello- I absolutely loved it. I had no problems with it and it also reduced my symptoms of PMS so the cycle was non existent anymore. I would highly recommend it. :)

Ok that cysts thing is VERY rare. Don't base your choice on that. NOONE gets cysts that have to be surgicallly removed it is extremely rare. You may get benign cysts on your ovaries but they usually go away. I don't know why the other mom told you that because that's going to scare you. Make your own decision based on intelligent opinions, not one experience that was frightening.

i've been considering it too, but reading the fine print on the commercials and listening to some of the stories, i think i've decided against it. i can't imagine IF something were to happen and i miscarry or am not able to have any more children what i would do...

I don't like it and neither did 2 of my friends who had it. We all had it taken out within 6 months of having it. Some people either really love it or some people REALLY HATE it so I guess if your insurance will pay for it and you are willing to take the chance then go for it.

I had it and loved it. For me it had no side effects, with the exception of no periods! Plus it lasts for 5 years and as soon as it was taken out, I had no problem getting pregnant again. I would recommend it, especially if you are a busy mom who forgets to take a regular pill like I was!

I have had it for about a year now. The first two or three days I got really bad cramps. It hurt sooo bad! After that it was fine and it works out great! I don't get a period anymore. All I get is two or three days of spotting every month. It doesn't hurt at all anymore. I don't even notice it is there. Although my husband does say that he can feel it when we are having sex.

I've had mine for roughly 2 years, since Oct. 2008. It hurt more than the doctor tells you to get it implanted and the cramping for the first several days is pretty bad but after that it everything has been fine. I've not had any issues with mine whatsoever. I haven't had a period since the bleeding from getting it implanted stopped. I don't have migraines from it like I have in the past with other birth control method. Just like in life, we only hear about the bad stuff no one talks about the good parts because they don't realize that it's good until it goes bad.

I got Mirena May 2009 and haven't had any problems at all! I have only had one menstrual cycle since it was implanted, which I am definitely not complaining about. I love not having to take a pill every day! I am sooo busy, it's nice to have one less thing to worry about.

I had my mirena for two years and it was very affective I had it removed because I started seeing changes in my mood, body and the cramps were starting to get unbearable. I only had a period every other month but knew it was there. I would recommend it just make sure to pay attention to your body everyone is different and it affects everyone different. Good luck and don't worry to much or it makes it worse.

I started the mirena just 4 weeks after my second child was born, so that was in July 2008. And it is still in. I get along great with it and it is obviously effective because there is not a number 3. I do have mild dull aches in my back and pelvic once a month and I am assuming that is when I would have had my period. I do reccommend this product to my friends, but what works for one woman's body may not work for the next.

I recently had the mirena done and I have had absolutely no problems. I found it very painless and am planning to have a 3rd child when it is time for it to be removed right now I thought it was the best choice because other birth control just doesn't agree with my body (side effects) and I am very happy with this mirena so far. Its also covered in most drug plans to otherwise it can be quite pricey

I have had Mirena for little over a year. I love it!! After the first year (at least for me) my periods stopped. That's the best thing. I heard other moms have their periods stop sooner. You get it placed at one OB visit it's almost like a PAP. For me, it hurt like crazy when they put it in....but I alwas tense and anxious about it, too. It has stayed in the same place for a year...no preferated uterus :) everyone is different but I will not be taking mine out for 4 more years. Good luck hope this helps!

I had to end up having it removed because it wasnt placed right when I had it put in and my new Dr. barley pulled on it and it fell right out...I would have another one if it wasnt for the pain of getting it put it...hope this helps

I guess this is too late...but I have the Paraguard, I have had it for 3 years and the only good thing is that its good for 10 years and I havent gotten pregnant...lol. I got it in Arizona and since moving through two states, doctors in two other states said the Paraguard was the worst one...and Mirena was better...so, who knows. I know with my paraguard, I cramp for 4 days, spot for 3 days and then start my actual period for 4 or 5 days...so itsnever ending. Id rather have a 3rd kid...but best ofluck!

I had the mirena inserted about 4months after my son was born. For me it was the best option because I was horrible at remembering to take a pill everyday and had an EXTREMELY heavy period already so th copper IUD was out. It hurt a lil going in, mostly cramping but nothing unbearable. It was a very similar feeling to having a cervical biopsy if any of you know how that feels. Took some ibuprofen and was fine. Now like I said I had really heavy periods ( super plus in a hour to two) and had horrible cramping, to the point I would be nauseas and throw up. It's been over a year and half and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it! I have almost no period, ever. Just very light spotting that doesn't require any tampons or what not and very little cramping! My boyfriend has never mentioned that he felt anything and I haven't had any weight gain. To anyone thats considering it, just do your research and do whats right for you. I'll be removing it in June sometime to try for another baby so we'll see how quick the rebound time is!

About a week after I had my baby I developed a terrible fever. Winds up I got a uterine infection and had to be hospitalized, so my ob told me to wait for 12 weeks before trying the mirena. A few days after I had it placed I came down with the same infection and was hospitalized AGAIN and diagnosed with pelvic inflammatory disease and now my ob won't touch me with any kind of IUD. If you're prone to infections you have a higher risk of getting one from the mirena, but 2 of my cousins and my cousin's wife who has never had a kid all have the mirena and it works great for them. However, I still cuss out the tv whenever the mirena commercial comes on lol!

I am on my second Mirena. After my first child I opted for the traditional copper IUD because I had had so many issues with hormone birth controls in the past. The copper worked great; I still had my monthly period, sometimes it was heavier than normal, but convienent none the less. After a couple of years I had heard about the Mirena from my sister-in-law who had lighter and sometimes no periods with the Mirena. I talked to my doc and he said I should give it a try because I would likely not have the reactions I had with other hormone birth controls because of the location of it. I love it (obviously since I had another inserted after the birth of my second child - which I was able to concieve within two months of having my Mirena out.) The only downfall I have found to having an IUD is getting through the initial 6-8 weeks. I had breakthrough bleeding and spotting but eventually it does subside and slow up (most times to nothing!) Your best bet is to talk to your doctor and see was he/she thinks will work best for you. I say give it a go!

Another point (ha ha) is that the strings from your IUD will take sometime to soften and curl back toward your cervix...in the meantime your partner may get a little "poke" every now and then. I'd advise not engaging in DEEP penetration for a while. But, semen really helps with softening those strings; so if he wants to be "helpful" (and he probably will) do your thing and speed up the process. =)

I've been on the Mirena for a little while now and at first I didn't like it. Once it was put in I got cramps right away, which was supposed to happen. They went away after 24 hours. Then I started bleeding (which is normal too) and it lasted for about 3 weeks for me. My periods are definitely lighter and way better than they were before! It took some time for me to adjust to it, sometimes I would sit the wrong way and I could feel it but all that is already gone. I do have to say that I now LOVE it and haven't had any real problems with it. Your body will just have to take a little time to adjust to it...

I had the Mirena in from Jan. 2009 until a couple of weeks ago. I didn't really have any major complications with it until a couple of weeks ago. The insertion was a lot more painful than I had realized it would be, but it only lasted for a few minutes. I still got regular periods that seemed a little heavier than before and would come about every 2 1/2 to 3 weeks. I have gained a lot of weight in the past year. My husband would occasionally feel it, but over all I loved not having to worry about birth control. I had to have mine removed because it somehow came half way out. I'm just thankful that I realized it was out, if I hadn't I may have gotten pregnant.

I had mirena for about two months before I ended up in the hospital and was told to sign papers saying who had the right to make decisions for my daughter because they didn't think I was going to make it through surgery.... so scary!! It perforated my uterus and gave me an infection that was nearly fatal. I spent an entire week in the hospital, in the worst pain of my life. I would rather go through child birth with no drugs again that ever feel that again. Personally, I wouldn't recommend it. I know there have been many people very happy with it, but I thought I should share my experience too. Have a good day hope it helps.

I just recieved the mirena and I'm loving it so far. No headaches, so side effects so far. I've had it for almost 2 months. I have heard some stories, but don't let that keep you from getting it, because you can always have it removed if the symptoms occur! They do say if you are that 1% who gets pregnant, that most likely it will be an ectopic pregnancy. That is scary, but remember it only happens in less that 1% of woman! The mirena is the most effective birth control there is so most likely this won't happen.

I think the best part of the mirena is no periods. I know you get that with the depo shot, but the depo has worse side effects. Like sucking the calcium out of your bones. As woman who have children, we already have problems with our children sucking the nutrients from us...so we don't need the help from a birth control.

Good luck and hope if you get it that you like it and have no side effects!

I was very happy with it and I do recommend it. If you are concerned with the hormones in it (I say if you have enough already like me lol) then I also recommend the Paraguard. It is just like Mirena but doesn't have any of the hormones. I am currently using it and have been for 1 year now. Hope this helps!
