My son has always had a problem with bottle feeds, since birth really. My friends and family say they've never seen anything like it before. I wont go into great detail about it as I've had to come to terms with the fact he just doesn't like formula. He's been on 4 different types.

My question is: Can I start him on cows milk early? He has become even fussier with night feeds now and only has about 3-4oz's. In the morning he'll have about 7oz's and I put 5oz's in his porridge. Some friends of mine have put their babies on cows milk at about 10 months but my littl tyke is only 8 months. He is the average height and weight of a 12 month old also, this may make a difference to his needs... I don't know??? Any input would be great! :)

I would recommend cows milk... at first water it down till he gets used to it... for the mums mentioning vitamins ect, there is vitamin drops out to put in the milk for bubbas that need cows milk. U can use the pentivite drops from 0-3 years old. My boys were the same. I started them on cows milk young and they out grew all the kids in their age group... my middle is now 4 and is very smart... can count to any number, knows the alphabet, can write every letter of the alphabet and his name along with his friends names ect ect... best of luck

Quoting Michelle:

I would check with your doctor before putting him on cows milk. What kinds of issues is he having with the formula? That would help with advice. Good luck!

Well the issues started with SMA gold, I've never breast fed. From birth he had terrible collic, well what the officials say was collic. He was on anti collic with every feed but he would squirm and scream and refuse to feed. So I put him onto Apamil easy digest to help the collic, which worked for about 2 weeks. I bought Dr Browns anti collic bottles also. I spoke to several different proffessionals, one said he just doesn't like it, so to feed him petite filous early so he gets his calcium, another said it may be gastric reflux, but he's never been sicky, so they ruled that out, another said to change his milk again, so I put him onto Cow & Gate regular, again it worked for about 4 weeks, then back to the problems again. I put him onto Cow and Gate follow on milk because there are more minerals and such in a smaller volume so I thought he'd get better nutrients that way. He is doing better than he ever has but it changes from day to day. I've started to give him two petite filous with lunch so I know he's getting his calcium. He eats solids very well, 3 meals a day. I had to cut him down to two bottles a day, one in morning, one before bed, because he point blank refused them through the day. I also weaned him at 3.5months, because he was taking in about 5oz's of milk everyday, I thought he needed something, so he started baby rice, and I could use his milk so it was getting in him. He drinks juice very well so it's not a drinking problem if you know what I mean. What's odd is that he's SUPER strong, crawled at 5 months, almost walking now at 8 months. You wouldn't beleieve the size of him either lol, like a 1 yr old! So I'm not worried about it really effecting his body, I just want to know that he's getting the best possible vitamins etc. It was so hard when he was newborn etc because it's what he needed and he wouldn't take it and it was so stressful and upsetting, I'll never have another child because I fear the same would happen again and I can't even begin to explain how difficult it was. He has his 8 month check up next week so I will bring it up again. But they normally just pass it off because he's so healthy etc.

Have you discussed this with his doctor? Could just be an intollerance to whats in it (a lot of brands have the same stuff in it even if they say their different than the rest)

I didnt put any of my children onto cows milk until they were at least 17 - 18 months old, I didnt think the risks outweight the benefits when they were younger.

You may want to discuss his issues with a pediatric dietician, one will know even more than your regular doctor what is best and what your options are. They will help you to find the right solution.

I started both my boys on milk early I did Vitamin D. My first I started him on it at 7 months and the other at 6 months...My second was like urs hated formula and couldn't decide if he liked a bottle or a boob and it was stressful so i ignored my dr and went with my gut...just make sure you give prune juice or white grape juice so that the milk dont constipat him...My boys are 3 and 17 months and they are both healthy happy and very smart so I say go with your gut and do juice too...

don't give him cow milk until he is one year old, he can develope allergies to it, plus it can give him upset stomach, plus he won't get the nutrition his little body needs. i know its hard with his being a fussy eater but you have to stick to your guns. he needs to get his calories from formula. if thats all he eats then that is all he eats. i had the same problem with my son not wanting to eat alot. he only eats when he wants and eats like a bird. but just know that they know how much and what they want and for right now we just have to go along with it. don't worry it WILL work itself out. good luck.
