Is rice cereal the best choice for a first food? We did that with our daughter but I am hearing that avocado is a better choice? Thoughts? Advice?

I used cereal. I think it's safer than anything else. They say to introduce one new thing at a time after introducing cereal. But ask your babies doctor about it! You never know!

I started my daughter on avacado, and she loves it. In fact, I've never even given her rice cereal. My doctor also said to start her on the non-sweet veggies, so she wont get used to the sweet stuff. From my I've read, and what my ped. says, rice cereal is only suggested because of tradition. There is no specific reason to give it as a first food. Do what you feel is right for you and your little one though. Good luck!

At 4 months you should start with rice cereal, not giving anything new for 2-3 days because of allergies, after about a month of cereal once a day then you can add in a vegetable they prefer you start with veggies, first remebering the 2-3 day rule, go thro all the veggies, then start fruit... Here goes what I did, my son at 4 months had rice cereal for a month, at 5 months we did oatmeal instead of rice, for dinner, then I started gving him a vegetable to at dinner. At 6 months I started doing oatmeal for breakfast and a vegetable and fruit for dinner, by 7 months he had oatmeal and fruit for breakfast with a vegetable for lunch then a dinner like with meat at dinner time. now at 8 months he eats basically table food, vegetables pieces of fruit, pasta, yogurt, pancakes, waffles, applesauce, I buy the gerber graduate meals.. Hope that helps!

abigail had pureed sweet potatoes as her first food. her old doctor said to start with a pureed veggie (and for some reason he said to have her start on something that was orange in color). the reason for starting with a veggie is so they don't get "addicted" to only the sweet tasting foods (ie fruits).

i wouldn't suggest doing anything with peanut butter or diary until your child has reached a year in age at least. espcially if you or someone close in your family is allergic to either, because really allergies aren't genetic but can be more likely to occur if you or your spouse or other children are allergic to peanuts or what not.

pureed fruits and vegies are the best choice (according to the professionals anyway) they said rice cereal does not need to be used as a first food, it tastes horrible and causes constipation. we made our own pureed foods with cheese cream and butter and gave her rusks with peanut butter or cream cheese (for weight gain she was FTT). she started her solids at 3.5 months
