With my 3 boys, I had to switch them cold turkey. And they all went straight to hard spout cups. For some reason, they just didn't like the soft spout kinds. Now, my daughter on the other hand, was pickier. She would only take a soft spout cup and only on her terms. They were all off the bottle by 1 year though. I wouldn't stock up on any particular kind of cup until you know which kind he will like, though. (Been there, done that).

@Magen

Very true! I have sippy cups for my daycare kids starting @9mts I use NUK though. I give them their water or formula in it. Early introduction is very important. Many parents are not aware of the damage extended bottle and pacifier use can have on the formation of the teeth and jaws.

Buy some NUK brand sippy cups they have nipple like sippy cups for an easier transition. They are soft so its easier for them to mimic bottle action but still requires them to use it like a plastic sippy cup. If he is really attached to the bottle I would slowly introduce the sippy cup give it to him with with at all meals and try to replace any bedtime bottles with a sippy cup before bed. I know of many parents that just threw out all the bottles and started cold turkey over a weekend, but they came back to daycare sippycup ready.

Give him the sippy once a day, then half a day, then all day. Just take it slow. Once the bottle is gone, its gone. He'll have tantrums but it'll get better. Good luck!

My son is 9 months and Im already training him to drink from a sippy cup, many people think its too early but actually his dentist recommends it. The bottles i regularly use are Phillips Avent so I found a transitional sippy cup where the part where he drinks from feels just like a nipple from the bottle. So maybe you can trick him into thinking its a bottle and then when he gets that maybe he';; let go of the bottle and start with sippie cups.
