Ok so i went to see my midwife yesterday and she said that my cervix is thinned out and im already dilated 2-3centimeters. My due date is Oct.8th so im just about 37 weeks(well actually on Thursday) she said that i can go into labor any day now. Which im extremely excited but i havent really had what they call the "braxton hicks" i got that tighening and hardening all over my abdomen about 2 weeks ago but havent had it since. However i have been getting cramps for the past two weeks. That period/ diarrhea cramp and it comes and goes throughout the day.

So my question is it possible to have contractions without knowing it and about how long do i have before i go into true labor if im already 2-3 dilated? any comments would be helpful!

I had a midwife as well and it was such a wonderful experience. About your question... you can be 2/3cm dilated for a while. I knew someone that was 2/3cm dilate for at least 2 weeks. You can have contractions without knowing but once you are in true labor you will know whats going on. As for my experience, I woke up with a cramp in my stomach and then went back to bed. Half hour later I felt another cramp and timed it. They were 5 mins apart for a half and hour then moved to 2mins apart for the rest of my labor. My labor and delivery was 9 hr start to finish. Everyone has a different experience. They tell you the typical labor for a 1st time mom is 18 hr, shes normally past her due date and the contractions start at 15mins apart. I am an example of how you can have a different experience, my 1st baby was 5 days early, and my contractions strate a 5mins and I had her in half the average time. I wish you all the luck and hope you have a safe and quick delivery. I am preg with my 2nd and am using the same midwife and I am excited to see how this labor goes.

It is possible to have contractions and not know it. There is no way to determine how long you have until you go into full blown labor. Each person is different. 37 weeks is considered full term and there is no risk of the baby not being born healthy. I would just relax and let nature take its course. your bodu knows when it is ready for you to have the baby. You could go to 40weeks without having any more changes in your cervix.

If there is leakage, you may want to let your doctor know. I had minor contractions for 5 days and my water was slowly leaking out. When I went to the doctor, they did a sonogram and turns out there was hardly anything surrounding my baby and had to do an emergency c-section.

i went into labour at 11:50 pm, got the light cramps and diarreah - thought i ate something bad, didn't realise i went into labour LOL till the pains kept getting stronger...! Anyways, i went into the hospital about 3:30-4am and was very glad i got their then as my pains where very strong and i was 6cm dialated (had no idea i was that far) didnt have long to go...! 6:55am my lil boy was born...! Very quick labour...! If you are only 2-3 gone you might have a lil while...not sire! Have fun and good luck.

well I new I was going to start laboring within 48 hours when I got the bloody show(mucus plug comes away). It happened all three my births. In my last pregnancy I experienced similar to you,and was dilated to 3 cm for 2 and a half weeks leading to her birth, with no action!!!So honestly it all comes down to your body. And yes,you can have contractions and be slightly unaware of it.A friend of mine just had her second son 5 days ago,and for the week leading up to his birth she was experiencing very painful ones....and wasnt in labor,so just hold strong:)Best of luck when the moment comes!

i was that dilated for 3 weeks and those "cramps" are small contractions.

When I was 2-3 centimeters dilated I still went another 2 weeks before they induced me. When I was induced I was still only 5cm but labor went really quickly. It is really different for everyone so you could go tomorrow or a few days or a few weeks. I did not have one contraction until they broke my water, that I felt anyway. The nurses said I was having contractions and I couldnt even feel them. Once you lose that mucus plug u know that you are getting really close!! Best of luck to ya!! The cramping could be the baby working his/her way down, I had terrible pains like she was literally going to come out at any moment the last week before I was induced!! hope some of this helped!!

Quoting megan:

I started having braxton hicks at 28 weeks and was dialated at 3 at 34 weeks. I stayed like that till 39 weeks when my ob finally induced me. It turned out he was so low that he got his head stuck and thats why i never went into true labor. They cut the perineum and broke the tail bone to allow his head to come out. So just wait it out and your baby will know when to come out or the dr will when we reach 39 weeks.

They broke your tailbone? Geez, i had the same problem, head stuck, but they did a c-section. I broke my tail bone in high school and to this day have trouble sitting for a long time.

i started having contractions and a thinned dilated cervix at 5 and a half months so i was put on sick leave and given tablets to control the contractions. I carried on until 37 weeks when i was so dilated that the ob decided to induce me

Yeah you can have contractions without knowing it. Most of the pain I went through only started after my water broke.

The difference will be once your contractions dont go away and get closer together and stronger.

Sounds like your body is getting all revved up and ready to go. Your body will eventually get to a point where it will tell you this is it, and believe me when I say listen!

the day before i had my daughter i had the "period/diarrhea cramp" stuff and had no idea it was the beginning of my labor...in my case when that started it was only roughly 36 hours till she was born...
