Help with sippy cups

Caitlin - posted on 10/01/2009 ( 5 moms have responded )

Our daughter is almost 11mo old. We've tried various types/brands/styles of sippy cups and she would rather chew on them and throw them than drink out of them. She figured out how to get her formula out of them but just spits it back out and will scream for her bottle. Anyone have any ideas, how did you get your children to take a sippy cup?

I agree with the straw idea. That's how my DS learned to use a cup at about 9 months. I just filled the cup with his milk and gave it to him, at first he'd sip on it and then demand I put it in a bottle. After only a week, he was happily drinking away from his straw sippy. I was shocked!

My 9 month old son uses the kind with the straw. He's breastfed so he's rarely had a bottle, but the straw requires a similar sucking motion to get the liquid out, plus he doesn't have to tilt it up to drink. He just played with the regular kind. If you can find a sippy cup with a soft straw (we use Playtex cups) that might help.

Dont give in. I trust the Nuby brand. They make a transition nipple that is kind like a bottle but its also a sippy cup. My daughter fought over the bottle and sippy too. I tried the nuby sippy and she took to it well and after she was use to that it was easier for her to move onto the regular sippys. Hope this helps.

honestly, by the age of 1 i took it away and gave her a sippy cup showed her how to use it and let her go, she wasnt getting a bottle back so she had to learn to use it and like it and i think it took maybe 2 days until she was completely ok with it.

be persistant but she may not take it, you might have to do the straw kind. just keep giving it to her and dont give in...she will eventually take it...they are very manipulative and smart, believe me i have 3 boys
