The best way to start is by volunteering. Companies love seeing things like that. If you went to school or did any type of trainings put that on a resume as well (even if nothing came from it).

A lot of people are unemployed right now, some have been for years due to so many lay offs.

I recently had an interview (I also haven't worked for over 3 years), they didn't even ask me about why I left my job, or why there was a gap. The last time I worked was early '09, I was in retail, and the recession hit us really hard in that first quarter.

As for cover letters, I'm up front as to the fact that I took a break from work due to the recession and having my kids. I talk about the fact that I was a volunteer swimming instructor and that I learned to use the new Microsoft Office (self taught, but they really don't care).

Craigslist is the best place now for job hunting. You do have to have an eye out for scams, but they are few and far between. You can normally pick them out easily.

Think about where you worked previously and how that experience could help you find either a similar job, or a different one.

Don't expect even an interview for the first 25-30 jobs you apply for, I know it sounds harsh, but the fact is, there are more people searching for jobs than there are jobs.

Keep positive and good luck.
