Take your little one with you when you attend the dentist for your routine check up he may not let the dentist take a look to begin with but it will get him used to the environment and they should be quite happy to answer any questions you have on all aspects of oral health care, there are also some excellent story books to help encourage children to brush their teeth :-)

My 21 month old doesnt like me goin near his teeth, wont even let me try, i give him the brush and he bites it and plays with it and finds that funny, i was told by his dr last week, that it will happen in their own time, but the trick is to not make an issue of it if they dont brush there teeth, he said as long as they play and think its fun it will happen, but you cant force it. he also said another reason not to worry is that by the time they are 7 they will lose their teeth ready for adult teeth and you can garentee that at that time they will know what to do and that its important.....just leave him to it and give the brush to your little one to play with and let him watch you, but dont make them do it x

My son (almost 2)and I play a game of brushing teeth when ever he has a bath or shares a shower with me, that he gets a go of brushing my teeth which means I get to have a bit of a scrub at his, after a minute he wants to do it all by himself- hasnt quiet got the hang of it but i think its a good start that he wants to do them!

My 2 year old's toothbrush has a picture of a lion on it, and she has Disney princess toothpaste. She get very very excited to use them, jumps up and down and claps haha. If there are any characters and/or animals your little boy likes, you could try getting a toothbrush/toothpaste with that on it.

I use the little electric toothbrushes for kids. I brush them first and then they take over, but because the toothbrush turns on its own it cleans them no matter what!

I let my kids pick their toothpaste and thier toothbrush(we have several they have picked from the store and got from the denist). I brush first and then let them brush after me to make sure they are getting good and clean. Not real creative but it works for us!

this may sound weird but i got my kids to by pretending that each tooth was a part of the house and they had to clean it really well! they really enjoyed it

my daughter would not let me brush her teeth, so we made up a song together and we sing it now when we brush them together.

Take your child to the store and let him/her pick out a toothbrush with a favorite character or something and then at home do it together. Let your child help you and maybe convince them to let you help them. I found my kids always liked to bite down or swallow the toothpaste first so I encouraged funny sounds and singing so that the mouth stayed wide open. They had a great time and thought it was really funny to see mommy doing this as well.

I let my little opne bruch my teeth first then she likes to brush her once she's done - messy but it makes it fun and seems to work!

you could try getting him to brush your teeth first and then ask if u can have a turn brushing his let him brush his own too if he wants but you should brush them before or after him until about 7 years of age its best to start brushing your childs teeth as soon as the first tooth appears hope this helps :-)
