How do you deal with a briliant 10 year old who never gets in trouble but has a terrible attitude?

My son has a woderful personality, very smart, and extremely helpful but his attitude sucks. I know he's spoiled but these tantrums are on my last nerve. He slightly stomps, sucks his teeth, and when I tell him to do something it's "I don't feel like it!" Now I know I'm the parent but I don't want to keep beating my kids. What am I to do?

I agree with Jamie a lot. But you also need to talk to him and try to find out why he acts this way. I he doing this to get attention, because he knows it gets under your skin. There is usually a reason behind this behavior. It will take a lot of time to work through this, patience and love. But you both can get past this problem.

Start taking things away, tv time, video games, computer, outside time. At his age spankings dont work. Hes figured out a smack on the butt lasts 10 seconds, so hes not likely to respond. By taking away things and I dont mean for a few hours Im talking starting with at least few days. And you have to consistent and follow through (my biggest problems) saying your going to take something and not doing so will send the wrong message. he is also old enough to be grounded. Hope this helps. Oh and you could get a video camera and tape him pitching a fit then later show it to him so he can see how ridiculous he looks. :)
