I agree that the one true way to know is when they are adults. Rebellion can cause a lot of feelings that you failed as a parent (a drug addicted child, a girl pregnant at 15, etc.), but it really depends on how that person turns out in the end. My friend's mom thought she failed because he lived at home until he was 21 and had done almost every drug available and was a certified alcoholic by age 18. But once he found out he was going to be a dad he straightened up and decided to fly right and has stopped drinking, doing drugs, and being irresponsible. So no matter how hard it is, always know that parenting is a constant, truly never-ending job that works for a long-term goal of a productive individual, and although it may seem like you're not being rewarded instantly, delayed gratification is definitely worth waiting for when it comes to parenting.

Quoting Traci:

You'll know when they grow up. If they grow up to be tax paying, productive adults, you'll know you did well. If they grow up addicted to drugs with 5 different kids from 5 different guys, you'll know you messed up somewhere down the line! LOL :)

This is untrue just b/c your child is a drug addict doesn't mean you didn't do the best for them that you could.

You know if you are a good mum if you're child has everything they ever need. Love, food, water and all the attention in the world and if you would gladly die for your child then you are a good mum/parent.

Thanks, my daughter will be 7 months on the 10th and I am constantly questioning myself if I am doing the best for her. I am glad that these are normal feelings. I just need not to get caught up in them.

You know your a good Mom when you worry about being one. Your children are healthy, happy, growing, and loved. But you wonder could I be better? could I do more?
