How do you stop an 8 month old playing the standing up in the cot game?

My son is 8 months old and recently descovered he can pull himself up in his cot. However once he is up he finds it funny, then gets scared and cries because he cant get back down.

He does this every bedtime and nap time no matter how tired he is and sometimes it goes on for 2 hours (I have no idea where he gets his energy).

The cot is the second to lowest position because I am pregnant with SPD and cannot physically bend lower to pick him up. This also makes constantly getting up to place him back on his mattress agony too.

If you have any suggestion on how to stop him doing this PLEASE HELP!!

it sounds weird but you need to show them how to fall!! at this age my little one would go all stiff and then wack his head as he hit the ground. It took a whole afternoon of showing him but he did learn that if he bent in the middle he would land on his bottom and not hurt himself

When my son first started pulling up he also had no idea how to get down so he would stay standing until he fell over. Why not try letting him stand in the cot when it's not bedtime and just sit next to him. When he stands up don't help him to get back down but just wait and see what he does. If he cries a little that is okay, they have to get a little frustrated sometimes before they will learn something new. The next thing he will probably do is fall over but since he's in the cot he will have a safe landing, just tell him it's okay and slowly he'll get the idea. My son did the falling over backwards method to get down for about 3 weeks and then he figured out how to sit down on his butt. The cot is the best place to practice because at least they have a soft landing.

Quoting Elizabeth:

hmmmm your in a pickle cause there is no way to stop it really, but hopefully he will learn to sit back down real soon. and because your pregnant you cant lower the cot. i would try to let him cry it out and maybe he will lower him self back down to sit. then at that point i would lower the cot and when you haveto get him he will 9 out of 10 times be standing so you can get him easily. good luck (sorry but babies just dont stop once they learn to do something new. lol) hang in there ;)

I should have said this. The cot has 3 positions, It's low enough that he can't hurt himself or fall out but high enough that he can reach the bar and I can get him when he stands up.

i know its annoying and frustrating and sometimes scary but there is realy no way that u can stop them from doing it and it is kind of a good thing as it helps to strengthen their legs both of my kids have been doing it since about 6-7 months i just lowered the cot position so they cant fall out
