my son will be 4months on next week. right now he is eating 5oz every three hours. He was on breast milk but is now on formula, and will start cereal next week. My home nurse says i should be spacing his feedings out more and feeding him more. what is your opinion and how how much/often did your child have a bottle at 4mon?? should i try and start spacing them out more often with more immediately, or should i just let him eats how hes been comfortable because it should all change when he starts eating cereal, right??

My daughter was a chronic reflux baby, so i could nt start her on solids untill 7 months as there tummies are not fully developed for food too early and especially if they suffer from vomitting, although i would advise you put your baby in a routine not your baby put you in a routine, spacing his drinks out will not hurt him it will encourage him to drink more and less often throughout the day, i was tough on my little cookie and although it was a little hard to start she is now 9 months old, goes to bed at 9pm and wakes up at 9am and has two very substantial sleeps in the day! keep his mind occupied and he wont think of food too much! :) x

the american academy of pediatrics and the world health organizations recommends not introducing anything besides breastmilk (formula) for 6 months

also if you are physically able to breastfeed then you would not need to moniter any intake as long as your baby is growing

dont try to make your baby do what anyone says to do- listen to his needs and fill them.

I think at 4 months with my boys I actually started solids so really what was not solid was liquid. Meaning if I gave them usually 5oz formula when they got 2 oz of cereal the formula went down to like 3 oz. The cereal will fill their tummy differently so just watch for cues. Your son will most likely show you what he needs. I was surprised everytime I freaked it was like they knew and within a couple days I picked up on what they wanted from them.

O wow. I can't believe they told you to hold off on cereal especially if he is interested in eating. My doctor specifically asked, his she watching you eat and acting like she wants some..than you can probably start. Doctors basically give suggestions based on medical data. When I told her I was putting the cereal in her bottle she said, we don't recommend it, but if it works for you by all means continue!

I put a tablespoon in her bottle with formula. I try a new type of fruit (stage 1) about each week. It takes getting used to. The whole eating thing but they get it. O and she sleeps through the entire night. At around 7, 7:30 that's all she wrote. The doctor was amazed that I have to go and wake her up at 6:30. I do that every day because that's what time I get her up to prepare for work so I just do it all the time.

My daughter is almost 6 months and she has a bottle anywhere between every 3-5hrs... she is a gassy girl but thats a whole other issue. right now i feed her about a half a jar of baby food with either oatmeal or rice cereal in it once a day and i am going to start doing twice a day this next week since we have been doing this for about two weeks now . She hated the rice cereal all by it self even with formula so I just went ahead and jumped into baby food. And she does great. It sounds like your little one is definitly ready for food if he is sitting up all by himself... Drs are great but sometimes they only go by the "standards" and not what each individual baby needs. So have fun and enjoy the baby food messes...=)

Thank you for all of your advice I greatly appreciate all of you taking the time to respond it was very helpful. I havent been stressing over his feedings as much now because i just want him to be comfortable, let him eat as often and as much as he wants, even if he gets the turkey belly that the doctor said he would. Also, if you have any advice to the questions i asked Khadijah, i would really appreciate any advice. Im curious now when other moms started their infant on cereal. My son took formula really hard for the first month, do you think he'll have problems tolerating the cereal as well? I'll of coarse still be using his formula for lactose & gas w/cereal, i just hope his belly will tolerate the cereal. Im also curious how much and how often infants should be given cereal just starting out. ive cereal fed infants when working in day care before but they were already accustomed to it. any advice?

Khadijah, thank you for the advice. My doctor doesnt want me to start giving him cereal quite yet...Im not even sure why he is making me hold him off because i know hes ready. you said 'the doctor said all she needs right now is really formula'??did your doctor suggest holding her off until 4months or did they say it was ok for you to go ahead and give her cereal at 3mon.? My son is a good sleeper at night too, he goes to bed between 7 and 8 and doesn't wake up until 8am, but he eats two or three times a night still. does ur daughter still take a bottle at night or has the cereal helped hold her off. when you were just feeding her cereal and formula how often did she eat cereal? I know my son is ready, he is sitting up by himself now and watches me eat every time, and when i usually give him a taste of ice cream or somethin he throws a fit because he wants more. do you think i should go ahead and start him on cereal? I know the doctor is going to give me the ok next week anyways. Thanx for the advice! you have a beautiful daughter!

hey there! my daughter is four months. she drinks 5-6 ounces every 3 hours with rice in each bottle and she gets applesauce, sweet potatos or bananas(for right now) like two times a day. then she goes to sleep like 7:30 and wakes up 6:30 in the morning and does it all over again. the doctor said all she needs right now really is formula

I have been told with all my children that you feed them whenever they are hungery and as much as they want. there is no need to space it out. He will most likely space them out himself when you start feeding him cereal.

My daughter was eating about 5oz every 3-4hours at 4mths old. We started her on cereal at almost 5mths old. Personally I think that it all depends on your child, try giving him more than 5oz, it might hold him off for longer, If it doesn't you can always give him a little bit of cereal, but not much. Now at 9mths old my daughter has about 5 5oz bottles a day and then some water with meals. : )

hope this helps a little.

I think that if that is what comes naturally to him and you don't have a problem with it then just let him do it. Besides, once you start bringing solids into the picture, he will naturally want bottles less and less often the more solid meals he eats.
