Pay attention to your doctor's recommendations and follow them. Children aren't ready to eat solids until they can easily turn their heads away when they're full (so they need some head control) and they can spit things out (so they also need some tongue control). Children also should actually be interested in eating something aside from their bottle-if all they want is milk, then just give them milk, but when they start to get interested in what you're eating then it's a good indication that they're getting close to wanting something to eat that comes in a spoon instead of a bottle. I have friends who started their children on cereal about just a few weeks old-but studies say that children who start foods earlier than 4 to 6 months are at greater risk for developing food allergies and diabetes. Ocassionally a child will have the head and tongue control, as well as the appetite, for cereal earlier than 4 months, but that's uncommon, and your doctor will let you know if that's the case. Children have small stomachs, so they're going to eat less food more often than we do. And they already grow up so fast--don't rush them!

You should really talk to your peditrician about this. The doctor will also know your child as well as you do, just in a different way. Starting your child on cereal too early can result in food allergies. Are you really going to risk putting your child through that? There are reasons why they set age limits for eating cereal and table foods. As a parent you should want to do what is in the best interest for your child and that means working with your childs doctor about such things. Making healthy decisions for your child is important. You should never do something just because it worked for someone elses child. Every child is different. You could really be putting your child at great risk by not listening to your doctor.

I have had 4 children and all of them started out around 6weeks old. None of them have any health problems. They are all right on schedule with there weight. Their ages are 10, 8, 5, 2 yrs old

Hi Bridget. I so thought I was going to get attacked for saying I started at 6 weeks. I am so glad that there are other mothers out there that did the same as me. My baby also had no problems and loved it. Can I ask you a question did you put it in there bottles or spoon fed it? I spoon fed with him and he was fine.I tried the bottle thing but he didnt seem to like it that way.

I spoon fed my first and she did well. My others spit up the formula so the doctor told me to put it in their bottles and they loved it that way.  I had a doctor from the hospital the day I had my 3rd child tell me to start feeding it to her at 3 days old because she had acid reflux and that doctor didn't beleive in putting them on any meds so she had me put rice cereal in her bottle when she was only 3 days old and she is 5 yrs now and did just fine and has no problems. And she has never been on any meds for the acid reflux and hasn't had any problems with it since she was about 6 months old

That is awesome. When did you start them on the stage one food? Mine was a little over 2 months.

About a week or two after the ceral which would have put them at about 2 months also. I think that making a baby wait until they are 4 to 6 months old is a little long unless they are having problems. They need the nutrtion just like we do.

Yes, you are correct. Thank so much!! :)

The general rule of thumb is when they are able to sit up on their own and they have lost that reflex to push stuff out of their mouth. There are studies which link giving solids to babies at too young of an age with juvenile diabetes.

My dr told me not to start my daughter on cereal till she was 4-5 months... i ignored him and started her on it at 3 months. she sits up and swallows every bite! she already knows how to eat from a spoon..

Although a doctor may not know our babies as well as we do they are medical professionals who are knowledgeable on subjects that we may not be. I think that as Mom's we do have to make our own choices but I also think that it's wise to take a doctors suggestions into consideration. I started my son on cereal at 6 months and he accepted it really well. Where I was given cereal at only 3 weeks old when I was a baby. Now recent studies have shown that feeding a baby cereal before 6 months of age can cause all sorts of things including Asthma....and guess what? I have asthma. Could it have been the fact that I was given cereal at 3 weeks of age? Well it could be....

I started my son on cereal at 6 weeks. I was breast feeding him and he was draining me so I started him on formula and he still wasn't satisfied. The doctors will tell you to wait till the baby is 4 to 6 month but if you get a good pediatrician they will tell you otherwise. Years ago children ate all kinds of stuff early. My son was ready to start eating. At 2 months he was on babies first foods and at 4 months he was on the second foods. He is now 6 months and eats all kinds of table food. Every child is different and you will know when your child is ready..

this is exactly right, my mom and sister tried to get me to feed my son at three months because he was licking his lips. they evern went so far as to give hima couple bites of cereal before I had even tried it with him. My pediatrician was told us that we had to wait till the 6month mark to give our baby food/cereal. He said it can be unkind to their insides to start them on anything earlier. I waited and evrything has been good since. I dont like it when people think they know more than doctors and just go ahead and go against study and research. Theres no rush to get your baby onto cereal right..? I think alot of people have the notion it'll make their baby sleep more.. wrong.

You can start adding it to There bottle as early as 3 months. You may have to cut the hole in the nipple bigger. It is all in how comfortable you are in it.

Oh, and make sure that if you do try to do 1st stage foods, let your little one try only 1 veggie or fruit at a time and for a straight 4 days so you can make sure there are no food allergies. Then you can move on to the next veggie. Once all of those are ok, my pediatrician said to mix it up...give carrots one day, green beans the next, and so on, until you're comfortable trying fruits. I've heard that the trouble with starting fruits too early is that they prefer the sweet to the veggies and after a while they won't eat the veggies at all. Just an afterthought...

My baby showed an interest in food around 3 months. She would open her mouth and smack her lips when I would eat, so I asked the pediatrician about it and she told me to let her taste only 1st stage veggies and only rice cereal. She said that if she wants it, let her have it and see how she is. Now she is almost 5 months old and she's a veggie and cereal eating pro. In about a week I will start giving her fruits and letting her taste that. My baby didn't like the cereal at first so we started mixing it with white grape juice and she likes it much better! Hope this helps...

If you feed oatmeal use the real stuff. The pre packaged stuff can cause a rash that looks like exema. We found that out the hard way!!! Your doctor won't be able to tell the difference either. they will treat it like exema but it won't go away until you stop the oatmeal.

We started at 4 months. It all depends on your baby. At 4 months my nephew was drinking 8oz bottles every couple hours....and no he's not overweight. He was just hungry all the time. If they don't take it well eg. constipation, vomiting it's too early. Also I would stick with the rice cereal. As babies are still prone to food allergies and you may not be able to pick up any symptoms.

I so agree with so many of you. There is NOTHING wrong with giving a child a little bit of cereal earlier than 4 months. If they're hungry after the bottle, then a tablespoon full of rice cereal with some warm formula or breastmilk will help to fix that. It will fill them up, but not OVERFILL them. I wouldn't suggest a WHOLE bowl of cereal until they're AT LEAST 4-6 months old because like others have said... it will make them feel like a water balloon.. and what happens with a water balloon?? They POP! As will your child. Most likely.. the baby will be too full, and you'll end up cleaning up more than just spit up!! :-)
Again, with the experts! Sheesh! LOL Boy, how did our grandparents and their parents and ours ever raise US without experts?? Don't eat this cuz it can cause cancer, don't eat that because it can cause diabetes, don't eat this too early cuz it can cause food allergies... BULL.
Rice cereal is a single grain cereal. Easily digestible by a babies digestive tract IF given in the right portions. They tell you to start your infant on RICE cereal before anything else, because it is not likely to cause any food reactions. As always, start giving only 1 food at a time, and keep an eye on the reaction of your baby. If you notice ANYTHING out of the ordinary... STOP feeding that food and talk to your child's doctor. Always wait at least a week before giving a new kind of food. (Example.. start with banana baby food. Feed for a week. Watch for signs from your baby. If no problems occur with bananas.. go to another stage 1 food. Feed that for a week. This will ensure that if an allergy IS present.. you know WHAT caused it.)

Both of my children were voracious eaters. My oldest was a month old. I couldn't fill her up with a bottle.. but feed a tablespoon of cereal first, then give her a bottle and she was happy.
Definitely listen to the women here tho.. and DO NOT put the cereal in a bottle!! Always feed cereal and foods from a spoon!!
I really hope that this helps you. If you are concerned that she needs more.. give her more.. but ALWAYS in moderation.

My now 6 year old son started eating cereal at 2 months because the formula no longer filled him up. you can put it in the formula early, just not as much, and it will be like a filler, like they were drinking a milkshake instead of a bottle of milk. you will have to cut the hole in the nipple a little bigger if you do this though. as far as eating it out of a bowl while its thicker, i would suggest waiting until they can sit up alone. its harder to swallow when it is thick. but really as any parent knows, its about when you feel like its time, every kid is different. i hope this helps you out, let me know!

Everyone was telling me to use cereal and i didnt want to bc i thought it was too early but i finally gave in and i put about a tablespoon or a little more in her bottle at night and it really helps. She started going to bed at 8:30 and only waking up around 3:00 to eat then back to bed until about 6:00. I only give it to her at night and shes 2 1/2 months old now and she sleeps through the whole night :) So i think if your baby can handle it give it to her, if not then dont lol
