Ihad this problem with my oldest although she was 2 . I was pregnant with my youngest and needed the cot for him. I used to put her to sleep in the cot and once she was sleeping move her in to her bed this got her used to wakng up in the bed then eventually we started putting her in the bed with a rail up like jessica said and after a few nights of tears she stayed there and now she is 3 and loves being in abig bed

She probably won't stay there, (my son is almost 2 and still in his cot because we tried but i wasn't persistent enough) . You just have to be persistent and keep putting her back into bed.
She will fall out, Zach did heaps of times, but if you get a toddler bed they are low to the ground and I put pillows on the floor just in case.

If she can't sit up on her own, I wouldn't put her in a big girl bed just yet. Why not co-sleep with the new bub or buy another second hand cot?? Unfortunately you can't rush children they will do what they want when they want and how they want to do it. Personally I think 16 months is to young to put into a bed.

Don't worry! There are these rails you can buy at walmart or target or places like those that fit on to the side of the bed, usually braced between the mattress and the box spring! I used them for my oldest child when she was about 12 months and they worked awesome!

If you don't mind me asking, what is the reason she cant sit up by her self yet?
