How to get my 4 mth old to stay asleep during the night?

My 4 mth old has been sleeping through the night since he was 10 wks old, and now he has been waking up at around 2:30am for the past few nights. The first 2 nights i fed and put him back to sleep, and the 3rd night i rocked him back to sleep and he slept til 8am, and he almost feel asleep instantly. I'm wondering if it's just that he can't soothe himself back to sleep, and how i can teach him to that? Or any other suggestions would be great! Thanks.

Read "How to Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems" by Richard Ferber. We did it and found it very helpful. I wouldn't put cereal in his bottle if I were you, it doesn't necessarily make them sleep longer. I do agree that a routine at night is of great importance. We do bath, bottle, book and then bed every night no matter what, anit helps her to know it is time to wind down and go to sleep. Good Luck!

yeah i would agree with the other lady that said try putting some cereal in his bottle. should help him to sleep the night thru. although ours was not wanting to wake at this age, we had to set an alarm every night for 2.30am for a feed of which went for 1.5 hours each time. we did this til she was about 10 months when she was able to stop the night feed. its hard i know and you wake up in the morning and you just feel like you need to go back to sleep.

Well you are very lucky that you have actually slept a full night. My son is 4 months and has never slept a full night. I have a bedtime routine which is great for getting him to sleep at night. He goes to sleep between 7-8 and gets up between 1-2am eats and is back to sleep then he gets up between 4-5am eats again and then usually gets up when I get up for work at 6am. I can't wait for a full night of sleep!!!! I recently tried feeding him a little rice cereal by spoon the dr said I could start at 4 months and it did nothing to help him sleep longer. Good luck I think babies are just going to do what they are going to do eventually I will sleep again.

The best advice i had from my sister in law who already had a 7 yr old and a little girl my sons age was "get into a routine". I was opposed at first but she looked after my son when he was 4-5 months old while i was working, and had him on the same routine that she had her baby on. He started sleeping through the night that week and i doubt it was coincidence! She does bath and then bed every night and her daughter sleeps through. I dont bath Max every night but he goes to bed at a similar time and his meal times are at similar times each day.

my 6 month old goes to sleep every night with the radio or tv on. it relaxes him. there is times to where he will scream or throw a fit but you just have to ride it out. my infant goes to sleep every night between 9 and 9:30

he is probably going through a growth spurt or teething, your really lucky if he was sleeping through the night allready my son didnt sleep through the night until he was over a year old.

A friend of mine has twin girls. She had them sleeping through the night at 3 months old! They usually slept 9 to 9! Her trick and advice to me...keep them up as much as possible during the day. Obviously easier when you are a stay at home mom...but it worked for her. (Mine isn't here yet, but I plan on trying that trick). Good luck!
