How to get over the name of my daughter

I feel like I didn't take enough time to really name my daughter. I was at home while my husband was overseas, and every time I would bring up some new names, he would shoot down every single one. He's puerto rican, so he wanted a Latin name, which I was fine with, but he would come up with ones I wasn't 100% thrilled about. Well he came up with "illiana" but I didn't really like it, so I decided Lilliana. It was the first name he had said yes to, so I just left it at that. Well we were in the hospital, and it was time to fill out the paperwork for her name, and I was still not knowing what I wanted to fully name her. So my husband suggested Lilliana, with my middle name, Elizabeth. I was still unsure, but I decided ok I guess...(I had an unplanned c-section, so I was still on some drugs at that point)... Well fast forward to now, and I feel regret from naming her this. I think it is a beautiful name, and I love my baby girl so much! I just can't bring myself to call her Lilli. I like nicknames, but I don't like to call her Lilli because I don't think she looks like a Lilli. Anyways, sorry its such a long post, I just feel like I didn't take the time to really name my baby, and I'm feelin bad about it.

Any suggestions?

Lilliana is a beautiful name, i like nicknames but I wouldn't shorten it to lilli either when her name is so bonny in the first place.

Can you not find another nickname? I call my kids all kinds of silly names like my youngest is kaden who we call kadie which then gets kadie-bug and often her big sisters call her bug now lol. My oldest is cydnee I call her smelly lol, skiddy, skid-idle, cyd-us, My middle daughter is Sienna I tend to just call her that but her dad calls her sie-sie or poppet.

If you want some thing to shorten it to how about L-E like Ellie but her initials! Like ppl would say J-D for jack danile

It's a beautiful name but lots of people have nicknames that don't necessarily stem from their given names. My daughter got the nickname Lu when she was a couple of days old. She's almost 8 now and the only time I call her by her real name is when she's in trouble. :-)

You will naturally fall into calling her a name that you like and that suits her. Try not to stress about it.

Good luck to you!

I think Lilliana is an absolutely gorgeous name. If you really want to find a nic name for her I would say, wait until she grows a little more and you really get to know her attitude and stuff, nic names don't always have to to be from their original name. I have two daughters, my oldest is kiara Leigh and we call her kee, beautiful, Kiki kaka and when she was younger froggy ( which might work for Lilliana as her name means Lilly. My youngest is savannah sage who we call. Nannah, sanannah or banana lol. When I was younger I was called boo boo lol I'm almost 30 and the name has stuck I was also called tubby because I was too skinny lol and inkabobis talawaka because my dad thought it was funny to tell his friends. Good luck with your nic name search :)

My husband's sister's name is Lourdes, and people call her Debbie. My step-daughter's name is Isabella, and we call her Sabe. The point is, her legal name can be Lilliana, but you can call her whatever you like. :)

in my state, wisconsin, you can change a baby's name on the birth certificate for free within the 1st year of life, after that you have to go through the courts to change it.

I have been through this before! My daughter who is now 13.. I named her Marie Ann. Marie after my aunt and Ann after my grandmother. Well.. the name doesn't fit her really at all.. but I didn't know what to name her.. and now I'm so used to the name it's just normal now. Once you get used to it you'll love it. And I love the nickname Lilli. My daughter has a friend named that. Such a beautiful name ♥

Lilliana is awesome, I really like that. I wouldn't want to call her Lilli either. Just keep calling her Lilliana, there's nothing wrong with it, and you don't really have to shorten it... Otherwise if you really need to you can go with Ana... I like Stacey's idea with the L.E. as well.

I love all the nickname suggestions that everyone has given me! I really do appreciate the encouragement, and it's great to know that I am not the only one who has felt like this.

Graham Sreet: I love Liana as a nickname, that is beautiful!

Tracie Dumm & Tracy Stuart: thank you for the encouragement. I know I will fall into the groove with my girl, and a name will just naturally come out!

My daughter's name is Cecilia. We call her Cessa (short for princessa), Ceci, Cissy & Lia. Like what all the other mom's are telling you, just play around with her name to find a nickname.. It doesn't even have to be from her name :)

My daughters name is Adria. And her nickname is Sue. So I think really a name just comes along that fits. Doesnt always end up having anything to do with their real name at all! Lilliana is gorgeous name by the way!

The epidural still hadn't worn off of me when I fill out the paperwork for my son (I was kind of out of it). I knew I wanted to name him Sam, that was certain. Anyway, weeks later when the social security card arrived, it said Samual Alen. I had to actually stop to think if THAT was how I wanted it spelled. He's almost 16 now. It fits him great. His friends all call him Stewie (a play on our last name).

My daughter is named Zoey Alyn-Parker (that's her middle hyphenated name). She goes by Zoey, Zo-Zo (I hate that one), but most often we call her things like Little One, FINGERS (she has to touch everything - "Hey, Fingers, please don't touch"), I call her Boogie...don't know why...she's just My Boogie... Those are just some of her common nicknames. :) You'll find your groove with your daughter too. :)

Thanks so much everyone for the feedback and suggestions. It's definitely hard picking names when you think you already have a name, but then your spouse comes in and vetoes it. Lilliana is such a beautiful name, and I do love it, but I do think it will take time for her to grow into it. Nicknames are great because they are endearing and loving (not that full names aren't : )!) and I feel more bonded that way.

Names are SO hard! We have 2 boys and I always change the decided name about 4 weeks before they are born. For my first, he just 'fit' his name ( Eli Samuel) he is just Eli but when I want a longer name I just add of the middle and he just IS Eli Samuel. With my second we changed his name a few times and between 33-35 weeks decided on Zeke Ethan. I really liked Zeke but wasn't sure about Ethan but went with it as my hubby choice since I had picked Zeke. And even though I loved the name on paper, after he was born, it took a while for him to grow into the name. I love the name you have for you daughter - I like names that are not super mainstream. I would either call her by her full first, or LE - cute and original!

We picked my sons name out way early. So I didn't think anything of it and I started freaking out when I filled out his paperwork. For a little while I wondered if I had named him wrong. But now he is 3 and he completely fits it. Just give it a little time.

Why do you need a nickname? Call her Lilliana. Simple. She will have to learn her full name and how to spell it in Pre-K anyway. I love her name btw.

I love all the nicknames you have for your kids! You know, that is such a great idea to call her LE! For her initials! I originally thought of Eli, for her middle name, but I didn't like that idea because i had originally wanted her name to be Eliana, but my husband didnt, so maybe thats why. I call her Lills most of the time for short, but I love the idea of LE.

Most days I love her name, because it's beautiful, and I think she is too --don't all mothers :)!-- so it fits her, but for days that I want it shortened, I now have a name.

Thank you so much for the feedback, and the encouragement!

I agree with Stacey I think it's a beautiful name. and it's not common so you don't really have to worry that she's going to run across many other girls with that name. I also name my kids silly names my son's name is Noah but I call him pumpkin, my daughter is adrianna and I call her monkey.
