With each of my three pregnancies nothing started until I was in labour. Baby didn't drop, I wasn't dialating and my cervix didn't get soft until the contractions started and I had 3 "normal" deliveries. Don't know what would help you along though...some people swear by having sex or walking a lot.

This is totally normal. A lot of women don't start opening until they are in labor (and some don't start opening until they are in labor for many hours). 8 pounds is totally normal for 38 weeks. Besides ultrasounds can be as much as 25% off either way, so your baby may be as little 7 pounds or less and not ready to come out yet. I know women who have delivered 10, 11 and 12 pound babies vaginally! And others who agreed to have a cesarean and ended up with major abdominal surgery for a 7-pound infant. My advice? Wait. That baby will be out on its own within the next 4 weeks. If your doctor is pushing for a c-section (they do that a lot before the holidays, so you don't disturb their family time), get another doctor or go to a midwife. A midwife won't rush you for her own convenience, and will also know how to deliver a big baby vaginally (if in fact your baby is really big, which it apparently isn't).

Starting at 37 weeks you can use evening primrose oil or borage oil to soften the cervix. I forget the exact dose but I think I inserted 1 1000mg tablet intravaginally before bedtime (so it doesn't leak out) starting at 37 weeks. I had my sons at 37 1/2 weeks and 38 1/2 weeks.

There is nothing you can do but be patient you aren't even to your due date yet.

My second was over 8 pounds and she was born vaginally. My OB stripped my membranes at 37 and a half weeks. She was like "this is all I can do for you until you are 38 weeks. then we can induce if you want to". My water broke at home about a week later. I did a lot of walking and more walking and even tried sex with my hubby (I was too large to really do anything, though it was fun trying and the contractions that started afterwards were really hard and strong and could be times for about an hour. I think that is what ended up progressing me.

While your body will react when it is good and ready to react, you can try the walking and the sex. There are a lot of other home remedies too like eating pineapple or spicy things. Google it. You will be amazed at what you find. Also, don't let your OB talk you into a C-section if you don't want one. You can go to 42 weeks as long as both you and the baby show no signs of health problems. You should be going in once a week now and they should be listening to heart beats and possibly doing non stress tests (depends on OB) and making sure you and baby are still healthy. Good luck.

Anything after 37 but before 39 weeks is considered late premature. First pregnancies especially can go over 40wks. Don't rush it. Your baby is in there for a reason.

you're only 38 weeks, you have plenty of time. You can't rush it. You could realistically be pregnant four weeks from now before medical intervention, and still have a natural delivery.

Doctors get the size wrong all the time. I had a 9lb9oz for my first and had a vaginal with no drug delivery.

I'm assuming this is your first pregnancy you should talk to your doctor about how you feel, having said that you cannot make yourself dilate, your body needs to be in labor if order for the rest to happen. Good luck with the birth.

With both of my pregnancies I never dropped until I was in labor. I went to the doctor the day before and had not dialated or anything. I went from 2cm to 10 within an hour of my contractions starting. The doctor thought I was going to be sent home that night because of my visit the day prior...my son came before she got to the hospital

You don't do it, it will happen on it's own! ; )

I've had 3 kids, 2 natural deliveries (1st baby was breech and had c-section), my last one was 9lbs 11 oz. I saw the doctor the day I delivered him at 39wks (he was 6 days early) and she told me I wouldn't be having a baby that day, that I still had an unfavorable cervix. My water broke that night around 2:30am. Same thing happened with my 2nd baby, I wasn't dialated and had an unfavorable cervix then, too.

Hang in there, it will happen!

There are potential problems with any birth be it vaginal or cesarean. A friend of mine just had a 9lb 6 oz baby vaginally and had no problems. Your doctor could be wrong about the size of your baby as well. The doc could think you are going to have a 9lb baby and you could end up with a 7lb one. With my first baby my doc thought she was going to be over 8lbs, but she was 7 lbs 7oz. If you want to try natural I'd saygo for it

I was the same as Chelsey. With both my pregnancies nothing happened until I was in labour.

I didn't dialate, my babies didn't drop, I carried them the same way all through my pregnancy until the last few minutes before I had them. My waters broke at the very end of my labour and both kids literally dropped out with them.

Both were normal deliveries

Every pregnancy is different so even if you dialated 2 cm you could be that way for weeks. So it really doesn't mean anything if you haven't started dilating yet.
