I started my son on rice cereal yesterday. He seems to be doing fine with it. Do I put it in all of his bottles from now on or just a couple times a day??

NEVER put cereal in the bottle! the ONLY time - i repeat, the ONLY time - you do this is if he's being treated for GERD and is being medically supervised for treatment. food is given with a spoon - bottles are for formula and water. the idea that it "fills them up" so they "sleep better" is a *myth*. babies sleep when they sleep - they don't when they won't. rice cereal, nutritionally speaking, is not a lot better than the cardboard box it comes in - it doesn't add nutrition to the diet, it adds paste filler, a rapidly-digesting paste filler, at that.

if it's a growth spurt, the baby needs more formula, not paste filler with limited nutritional value.

You should never put it in the bottle like Medic stated! If you want to do cereal you should be feeding him on a spoon, if he spits it back out then that means he's not ready for solids yet. If you really do want to feed solids double check with your pediatrician and ask him if they recommend putting it in a bottle.....I'm sure they will say absolutely not!

3 months is prime time for a growth spurt which could be the reason he is wanting to eat every 2 hours. Solids before 1 are just for fun and should not be used as replacement for breastmilk or formula.

You don't EVER put cereal in bottles, it is for ONE a huge CHOKING hazard, and can cause many other issues. ALL food should be spoon fed and cereal is a waste anyways. If you want to start him on food try some veggies. Cereal is wasted callories that he should be getting from formula. Food before one is just for fun.

No. Cereal is not meant to be put in a bottle. It's meant to be eaten with a spoon. Additionally, cereal is to be given 2 times a day till the introduction of fruit/veggies at 6 months. Some doctors don't want cereal to be started till 6 months but mine said to start at 4 months. Any earlier than that, they're not able to digest it and you'll end up with a gassy, collicy baby.

Hello Angela. How old is your son? Rice cereal should only be given in the mornings and at night until your son starts eating solids throughout the day. The milk is still very important for them and should not be replaced with rice cereal or added to every bottle as your child will get indigestion and his little tummy wont be able to process all that food. At least this is what I did. Hope this helps.

The doctor recommended putting rice in my babies bottle because he had a slight opening/hole and liquid was getting into his lungs... We dont have to do that anymore but I do put Oatmeal in their bottle at night before bed. They really like it.

I have always put cereal in their bottles, and all 4 of kids are just fine as long as ur not propping up their bottles and not watching them they'll be fine. And cereal is what my doc has told me to start all my kids off on, it's fine to feed them cereal. I wouldn't feed it to them all day though. I feed me son cereal in the morning and veggies or fruit throughout the day and he's 3 1/2 months.

My son's pediatrician told us to use Enfamil AR. It has cereal already in it. It works wonders with him. It's safe to put in bottles and there's no extra mixing! With 4-5 oz of that before bed my son was sleeping through the night at 5 weeks! I recommend it to all moms. Good luck!!

My daughter was the same way. The doctor actually told me to put cereal in my daughters bottle at night but it was really runny so it didn't clog or cause a choking risk. During the day try pureed veggies to help with the hunger. Good luck...

I started my daughter on cereal at 2 months because she was drinking over 90 ounces of formula a day and was eating about every hour, so I introduced cereal. I never once put it in her bottle, you use a spoon and bowl for all solids. I don't believe that food before one is for fun, Ruby was still drinking over 50 ounces a day before one, only reason I stopped giving her so much was for the potty training. She would have easily drank the 2 pound powder of formula a day if I would have let her. Liquids aren't filling. I started oatmeal cereal at 2 months, veggies (1st) foods at 4 months, fruits (1st) foods 5 months, 2nd foods (fruits/veggies) 5 months, 3rd foods 6 months, 'toddler' foods and table foods 7 months, 'preschool' foods 9 months, Only you know your child, but putting cereal in the bottle isn't for introducing something new.

I have an 8 month old daughter. My doc suggested me putting rice in her bottles due to acid reflux and it also kept her satisfied more and stretched out her feedings. I did rice from about 3 months to 4 months then I started putting oatmeal in her bottles instead of rice again because she got used to the rice and that was no longer statisfying her. People do say to not put it in their bottles but its truely fine in some cases. as long as your introducing fruits and veggies from a spoon by 4-6 months.

My daughter is now 9 months but has had cereal in her bottle since she was under 3 weeks of age. She was in a childrens hospital when they started using it. As it is normal for them to eat that often at that age it is perfectly fine to add about 1/4 tsp per 2oz of formula. it will give that extra fill you are looking for but not be enough to harm him. Hope that helps. If you need more advice like that i suggest you call his ped so you dont have so many mixed comments GOOD LUCK

Eating every 2 hours is normal for a baby that age. My baby did it until 5 months! She was not ready for solids until 7 months she showed no signs at all of being ready until then.

blasted hungry babies!!!...lol
He honestly sound like my 19 yr old...I wish I could remember what I did when he was eating constantly, but I can not...Not until he was older anyhow.
My first wanted to eat constantly,my youngest NEVER wanted to eat...
Both are frustrating and stressful... ;)

Angela,
First babies are terrifying..lol
Are you sure he is crying b/c he is hungry?Sometimes babies just cry to cry or they are bored or over stimulated..etc
Has adding the rice helped yet?Have you tried a pacifier?

when i made the bottle I put one scoop to 4 scoops of formula because he is drinkin 8 ounce bottles. He is almost 3 months and hes to the point where hes eatin every 2 hours. I haven't started water yet i'm not sure when too. This is my 1st so im still kinda clueless.

Oh its fine to put it in their bottles...You make it runny like yogurt(not quite as thick)
People that say not to do that never had a kid that eats CONSTANTLY,or kid with feeding issues.
A LOT of Dr's suggest adding rice cereal to formula for reflux.
My oldest(now 19) was ALWAYS hungry and my youngest(10) had feeding problems(mostly due to muscle tone)
Anyhow Did you add it to his bottle because he eats all the time?Do you ever give him water? How old is he?
If you did it for refulx then yes I think you add it to every bottle. If you did it to get him to sleep longer than I would only do it at the night time feeding...

Thanks for the advice. I was told to start off with rice cereal by family because he's not gettin satisfied with formula anymore. He went from feedin every 4-5 hours to every 2 hours, but he won't be 3 months until next Wednsday.
