I need help ladies!!! My son just turned 9 months old and I'm trying to start weaning him off the breast but I don't know where to start. He's not on a set schdule or anything and he still wakes-up 2 or 3 times in the middle of the night and cries until he gets milk but i know he is just using it for a pacifier. I know I've created a bad habitby doing this, but I did it so my husband and I could get sleep ( he sleeps with us). So now I need help on getting him off the breast by the time he turns 1.

Have you tried having a relative or someone close to you give your son a bottle with breastmilk in it or formula? And maybe he doesn't like the nipple size on the bottle you have. He might not take the bottle from you because he is used to your breast. If you keep having lots of trouble weaning or you see no progress, maybe take him to the pediatrician or a breast feeding counselor for some professional tips.

For when you try to put him in his crib: you usually hear people say that letting the baby cry it out until he goes to sleep is the most effective way to get the baby to sleep alone. I tried that and I couldn't handle it cuz he cried for sooooo long, so instead I placed him in his crib and laid next to it so that he could see me through the bars. I did that for about 2 weeks until he was comfortable enough to fall asleep without always looking at me. And eventually I didnt have to lay next to him. Maybe this can work for you? Or something along these lines?

With weaning, I think that introducing a bottle would be the first step. For me, my sons grandma had to give him the bottle. He wouldn't accept it from me because he associated the breast with me- so probably try that first. If he throws up the regular formula several times you should probably give him the sensitive kind or another type that you would prefer giving him. Also if you haven't done so yet, you should probably start feeding him baby food and baby oatmeal. The oatmeal you have to mix with formula btw... feeding him solids should help keep him fuller for longer and in turn help him sleep longer. Introducing foods can be tricky. Be patient but persistent! It can take days or even weeks before your son is comfortable with flavors and textures other than breastmilk. I like to give my son oatmeal before its time for bed and it helps tremendously! And if you dont have a set schedule for bed time, maybe you should try to establish one cuz it can help you out a bunch.

(on a side note) maybe try weaning him to sleep in a crib. I also had to do that with my son because, like your situation, he would wake up 2-3 times (usually more) during the night for the breast. I had to gradually introduce him to the crib, and it took a long time! like almost a month to a month and a half before he would sleep in there by himself cuz babies dont like change lol

hope this helps!!! good luck!! :)

Hey Jasmine, yea I tried having my husband give him the bottle but he would only drink it if I gave it to him. I guess I'm like you, I hate hearing him scream for me so I always give in. I guess I will just have to toughen up Lol. Thanks again :-)

Thanks Jazmine for responding, he has been eating baby food for a few mnths now and he does pretty good with it for the most part. I do try to give him oatmeal before bed, but sometimes he eats it and sometimes he won't. Some days he will eat real good and other days he just wants milk. I also tried the bottle thing and he really does not like to drink out of it, and he definitly will not drink any other milk besides my breast milk.

So maybe I'll definitly try to put him in his own bed every night and I want to start giving him a bottle but I just wanna be done with breastfeeding and not have to pump.
