I think my 3 week old is constipated???

OK, Brent is squirming and having a hard time. I have recently changed his formula from Enfamil Lipil with Iron to Similac Advance with Iron about 4 days ago. Unfortunately I can't change him back because that is all that WIC will buy...(Stupid, I know) They said that he shouldn't have any problems because they are both equal. He had diarrhea for the first two days after being really gassy but now his stomach is hard, and he's still gassy.. He has been burping and tooting, so those things are working fine.. I've tried the "bicycle", pushing his legs up, and massaging under the belly button and the tailbone.... Is there any else? I have heard about the Karo Syrup but I really don't feel comfortable giving him that yet, and I have heard different views on it, so I'm kinda iffy about it. Is it OK to give a 3 week old the prune juice and water?? I've called my doctor and they are no help, all they ever say is that you have to come in, and we only have one car, that my husband has right now, so it's not possible today!

my daughter was never constipated but she had a stomach bug and was not eating properly so i took her to the hospital... they said to give her drinks like pedialyte not water... water can make small babies sick so check with your doctor before trying this out..

My son was the same way!! Its always good to ask the doc what they think. But I used childrens glycerin suppositories and cut one in half. It's very good for them and DOES NOT get in their system. My son hadnt pooped in 3 days! And after that he pooped in 5 minutes! I highly recommend them! Good luck...

I went through the same thing with both of my kids it started around 3 weeks old i did the whole karo syrup thing it worked with my daughter, but not my son with my son i took him to the doctor and everything and the doctor had me to go ahead and give him the prune juice that you would buy for an adult and mix it it would be 1 1/2 ounces or prune juice and 1 ounce of water you just have to be careful with it and make sure he doesn't get strangled on it. Good luck

3 weeks is too young for prune juice - his little belly won't cope with it. You can try giving him some suger water (1 teaspoon brown sugar in 30ml water) - it is actually recommended as a natural laxative and I've had fabulous success with it. My daughter has never had daily bowel movements, and sometimes goes 3-4days even now at 4months. The sugar water works for her usually within the hour.

With my daughter I had to change from powder enfamil to liquid... also if its coming out too dry maybe she should have a little water ever once in a while and try putting A and D ointment around the butt to help the poop slip out without cutting her rectum.... It works for my daughter all the time... And i do recommend talking to the doctor, every kid is different

talk with your pediatrition, maybe they can perscribe you a note to bring to WIC to change your formula back. I dont qualify for WIC and my doctor told me that if i wanted to go to Alimentum, that she would perscribe a not to WIC stating that my daughter needs the most expensive brand of formula to help her digest correctly and its too expensive to afford on your own. who knows maybe that will work for you

I didnt have much choice than to use "poo juice" as we now call it, just a teaspoon mixed with some water should help things out.

Hi. I went through something similar and we put our daughter on Mylicon for gas relief. It helped big time. Babies that young can poop 1 time every 7 days or 7 times in 1 day. Every child is different. You can also look into colic. If your baby's belly is distended (sticking out really far) and kind of hard i would talk to your peditrician. just to make sure there is no blockage. Most likely it is just adjusting to the formula. Don't do karo syrup...

havent read the other posts, but had the same issue, we were told to put any form of fruit juice mixed with water in a bottle, we also changed my son onto a prebiotic formula and this helped too. it's nasty for them, but these tips should help!

We used Karo syrup and had no problems with it. Similac has constipated all my kids and we had to go on Goodstart. Prune juice is another potion. You can add some and water in a bottle. I think its 2 oz. of each ( better call the dr. to check on that first) but that worked for a friend of mine.

Our daughter gets constipated frequently and has since she started eating solid foods. Our doctor said to give her 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of dark corn syrup. It works like a charm, but I'm not sure about a baby that age, she was 6 months before we ever gave it to her. Call the doctor and ask them if she can have it.

If you are nursing, even a little, you can drink the prune juice and it might help him. Also, buy "gripe water" at walgreens or cvs, it helps with gas and hiccups and any problems with their stomachs. How long has it been since he went to the bathroom? My daughter is 4 weeks old and she sometimes goes an entire day without going and then goes the next day. My doctor said that they can go several days without going. If he doesn't go for a couple of days and still seems fussy, you can try sticking the tip of a thermometer up his butt. This makes him want to push and hopefully he will go soon after you do this. I wouldn't use the Karo syrup, you might end up with a sick baby or a big mess. Hope this helps.

When my daughter was around that age she started having some of the same issues. My doctor said it was fine to mix a little prune juice with water and give it in a bottle. He recommended it actually instead of the prescription or over the counter stuff as more of a natural remedy. He also said a little sugar water could do the trick. I hope it works, I know how rough that can be!
