In Maryland, does an unwed mother automatically have sole custody?

Father was not involved during pregnancy, he walked out on me at 3months and said he was sure the baby wasn't his, as he told everyone else for the duration of the pregnancy. He was not at the hospital for my sons birth so he is not listed on the birth certificate nor has he signed an affidit of parentage. He took a private dna test when my son was a few days old which proved he is the father. He has willingly given me a low amount of child support under the table since my son was born 3 months ago. Once he heard I was pursuing child support enforcement thru the state he quickly set up an appt with social services asking 'how he can get his monthly payment down'. Of course they told him the more time he gets him the less he'll have to pay, so now he's talking about going for joint custody, he showed very little interest in our son before the money factor came up. I know this is all about the money, he flat out told me that. He has an odd work schedule and is gone two weeks out of every month then comes home for two weeks. He is threatening to take him the full two weeks he's home every month. Also, he recently sold his Mobil home and moved in with his gf of three months so he currently doesn't have a permanant address. Should i be worried? I have everything my son needs, i own my own house and property, he has his own room, food, clothes, support system, everything a child could ever need.

posession is nine tenths of the law. get a lawyer and explaine exactly what is going on. he only wants his son so he doesnt have to pay so much money. thats sickning. you should have every right to your son and the money your ex owes you. him just moving into his girlfriend of 3 months house doesnt seem like it would be a stable enviroment for your son. i wish u all the luck!

Update.. yesterday he was supposed to come get our son for four hours for a visit.. much to my surprise he sent his mother to come pick him up. She said something about his truck being worked on etc, but I firmly believe she kept him the full four hours because shes the one who met me when it was time for him to come home, no sign of BD. Unless he visited with him under her watch, chances are he didn't see him at all
