Infant Formula Use-By-Date??

A lady at work recently gave me several cans and samples of formula. Since we have to supplement a little formula while baby is away from me I was happy to except the generous gift. When she was giving them to me she said that her Dr. told her that the samples that expired in November of 2008 should be good for longer than that because “they just have to put a year use-by-date on them because they are samples”…. Some of the cans she gave me expire in June and August of 2009 and may not get used by then. The USDA says that they put that date on the cans because the nutritional value starts breaking down after that date. I have heard that certain things like vitamins, medications and formula have such short use-by periods because they just want you to go out and buy more… and that the nutritional value really doesn’t break down that fast. I am really weary about all the samples that are 5 months old now, but I wonder about the other cans… do you think it would be ok to go a month or two past the Use-By date??

I'm definitely cheap and formula can be expensive but I wouldn't chance it if the baby's under a year old.

Would you eat anything that was a month past the expiration date?  If not, don't let you'r baby have it.  They put the date on there for a reason to risk your baby getting sick.

Im very big on use by dates. For what ever reason the company puts it there is good enough for me. I dont even keep milk past the sell by date. I dont want to risk them getting sick. Nothing worse then a sick baby.

My moto is "when in doubt, throw it out". If I wasn't sure, then I wouldn't chance possibly putting my baby's health and nutritional needs at risk to save some money. If you search online, you can find promotions from formula companies that will send you free samples and coupons in the mail which would give you some formula for cheap or free that you could feel confident about.
