introducing rice cereal...

I introduced rice cereal about 5 days ago to my 4 month old. I mix 1 tbsp rice cereal with about 4 tbsp formula. Does this sound like a good ratio? I put it in a small bowl with his baby spoon and place my son in his bouncer so he is propped up to eat, but he doesn't seem to like the rice cereal that way--pretty much just comes right back out of his mouth by means of his tongue--I've read that babies won't be able to eat the rice cereal or any sort of 'solid' until they lose that tongue reflex that pushes things out so I'm assuming that's what this is. When will that reflex go away?? He does eat the rice cereal just fine when I mix into a bottle....so what's the deal??? I want him to learn to eat from a spoon!!

I know...this cereal is crap--there's really nothing good in it. I would MUCH rather start with the pureed veggies and fruit!!! But I figured that needed to be introduced only after he was eating the rice cereal from a spoon (which isn't happening). Can we try introducing pureed fruits/veggies now? However, the past couple nights we did put some cereal in his nighttime bottle and this morning he slept until 5am!! Didn't even wake once and he was sleeping at 8:30pm. Oh my goodness I was sooo happy/pleased!!!! It may not have been thanks to the cereal, but hey, I'll take a pretty good night of sleep for both him and I however it may happen!! :)

I've always heard about high levels of arsenic in the rice cereals, but I think the oatmeal cereals are good. Also, my pedi gave us the go ahead to start introducing solids at 4 months and that you can totally skip the cereals. And it's going to take a little bit for your LO to get the hang of spoon feedings, He's had the nipple for his lifetime, so be patient. :)

That sounds like a good ratio. I just did this with my son. U just gotta keep practicing. Is he not ready for a spoon yet possibly? Or try oatmeal cereal.

If I make a small bowl of it in the morning and he doesn't finish it (like usual because he still doesn't like it from a bowl/spoon!), can I save it in the fridge until his nighttime bottle???

Amy, it is normal for babies not to start solids until 6 months. In fact, that is the most recent recommendation by the AAP and WHO. My daughter was terrible with solids until she was 8 months old, so while I continued to try each week, it wasn't until 8 months that she actually took to solids. Until they are 12 months, it's really only for practice anyway. And to be honest, rice cereal is crap. Have you tasted it yourself? It's processed, nutrient devoid crap. All my kids pretty much rejected it. I ended up starting with pureed vegetables.

Jennifernider- we do not have a highchair yet otherwise he would definitely be in that for the rice cereal feeding. I figured it would take him several times of trying out the spoon and figuring out the cereal and new texture in his mouth before he'd be okay with it and/or get used to it. the rice cereal container says to mix 1 tbsp rice cereal with 4-5 tbsp formula/breast milk for the first feeding, so i just stuck with that mixture. i'm not sure what the right texture is...maybe he doesn't like it because it's too runny for him...i have no idea. oh you add water in the rice cereal, too?? did you ever put the rice cereal in the bottle?

Jodi- i'm not necessarily propping him up, just allowing him to sit up (as older children/adults like to do when we eat). he also just doesn't seem to know what to do with it once it's in his mouth---and i know it's new to him, but maybe you're right and he isn't ready..or maybe he just needs a few more times to get used to it and figure out what it is. i don't know--wish i knew the answer to that one. i know plenty of articles/people say you should not put rice cereal in a baby's bottle due to a possible choking hazzard, but people say there's like a million different things that we 'shouldn't' do with or for babies and tons of people do them everyday. the times i have given the rice cereal to him in a bottle he takes it wonderfully.

*side note* yesterday i didn't give him any rice cereal as i just feel like giving up with it. he's not doing anything on schedule. you're able to introduce rice cereal at 4 months, and of course, my child won't eat it (on a spoon at least). i probably won't give him any today either.... guess he'll just be on a bottle for who knows how long..... :(

Bottle n spoon are very different I would sugest that u put him in a high chair it's higher and Easyer but whatever works for you it may take a few times for him to get used to it it took my girls a few days but try a lil at a time I usually mixed about 1 ounce of water and a half a scoop of the formula u want the mixture right with the formula and water then just sprinkle the rice cereal in until it's the right texture u gotta be patient and tinny scoops it's very new to them I started my girls on solids around 5 months and the cereal on the spoon around 4 months or so and they got it after a few days best of luck
