Is 3 months too young to sleep train?

My son is three months old and sleeps in a cradle in my room (kind of). I breastfeed and at night I have become lazy and I have been feeding him while lying down. Inevitably we both fall asleep there and wake up a few hours later and do the same thing. It has gotten to the point that he won't sleep more than 20 minutes without me (usually...sometimes I get lucky). I have been putting him in the cradle for naps but he sleeps the first 10 minutes with me holding him then another 10-15 in the cradle. He then proceeds to scream like he's in pain. Is it too early for me to leave him and let him cry it out? Will it make him feel abandoned? I know it is hard for me to listen to him cry for more than a couple of minutes when I know I can make it better. Thanks in advance!
