Is giving my four month old 100% caffeine free herbal tea bad?

Juices just have way too much sugar. I have also heard that lukewarm chamomile tea helps to settle a little ones tummy in small doses (2-4oz).

i did not give our son tea to drink because the added water is unnecessary and can wreak havoc on his/her renal system. What I did do for teething is brew chamomile tea and soak a washcloth in it, freeze the washcloth and allow your little one to teethe on it. if she has tummy troubles see her physician

Chamomile tea is like a natural gripe water with no bad side effects, unless allergic. If your baby is sick or has gas or a tummy ache its ok. It will cure the problem. If no issues are there, i would wait until 6 months. I gave my daughter tea at 3 months because she had gas issues. Homeopathic doctors orders.

I've never given either of my kids ANYTHING other than breastmilk or formula under the age of 6 months (and then I added solids, not liquids). Their pediatrician does not even recommend juice until their 1st Birthday, and then, only on very rare occasions (for constipation, outings, etc.).

So, to answer your question... I would NEVER NEVER NEVER give my 4 month old tea, water, juice, or anything other than breastmilk or formula... and I know that my children's pediatrician would agree (but she's also a dietitian and is picky about food).

Honestly, my gu reaction was that I wouldn't do it because that seems very young to me still. My youngest just turned 2, but I remember her still only taking bottles at 4 months and starting solids at 4 1/2 months. I didn't give her any liquids other than formula or water until she was about 6 months or so, and then I gave her the Motts for Tots juice (no added sugar). She hasn't had any non-watered down juice yet in her life either - I usually water it down about half to compensate for all the sugar companies add into that stuff :)

Four months? I'd say not to do it, but talk to your pediatrician BEFORE giving it to your baby.

My pediatrician had us give him luekwarm chamomile tea but only 1 oz max of 3 times a day to help with colic. Which, sadly, it did not help. Other than it, it should still really be formula/breastmilk only at 4 mo.

Is she colicky?

my kids drink just water till they're over a year. if you don't give them juice they wont know what they're missing. and then when you do start juice with them dilute it alot. they'll think its a treat even though there isn't much flavor and it cuts down the sugar alot

4 months old seems so young to have anything other than formula or breastmilk. I did start my children on small amounts of cereal at that age but it was recommended by their dr. Always check with a medical professional that you trust.

It depends on what type, how much, & how often. I found this that might help though:

"In a published study from Italy of infants with colic, aged 2 to 8 weeks, an herbal tea of chamomile combined with vervain, licorice, fennel, and mint balm, up to 5 ounces was given with every episode of colic but no more than 3 times daily; compared to babies who received placebo, the herbal tea treated infants had significantly decreased colic symptoms."

if you get chamomile tea from a natural grocers and boil it in a pot of water, you can give it to her in a small amount to sooth a tummy ache or colicky baby.

My daughter had very bad colic and chamomile tea is the only thing that seemed to help at all she was about 3 and 1/2 when I gave it to her the first time. Now at 2 years I give her 1 cup of decaf tea every day instead of juice.

If she's having problems, I'd sure give it a try. Just a bit to start, to see if it works or if it bothers her. I don't think you're being irresponsible to do something a little outside the box.

But if you're just looking for an alternative to juice, just don't give her juice. If she never has it, she won't miss it!

It is a matter of choice, herbal tea is better then processed, man made, chemical stuff they sell at the store. Caffine free green tea is always yummy.

Do not use herbal teas at all. They are not regulated by the FDA. There could be something in there that isn't listed.

I agree it seems to young. Her father and I are waiting to start her on solids until around 8- 10 months. She does drink water now on occasion not much though. I am just afraid to put so much sugar into her little body.

Thank you. I wouldn't have given it to her without consulting her doctor I just wanted to network and see what other people's thoughts were.
