Is it possible to strain yourself when picking up a 32lb 20 month old child?

Because my son is so heavy and since he always reaches for me to pick him up I've been getting a pain under my left armpit that goes to my back then towards my chest and sometimes they both hurt. The pain isn't excruciating, it's just annoying. It comes and goes, but it only hurts afterwards when I pick him up. Has this happened to anyone else?

The pain you are describing sounds to me like you have a rib out of place. You could try going to a chiropractor, or else having someone pick you up from behind with your arms crossed in front of your chest (and you have to be fully relaxed for this to work) then have them lean back enough so your feet are off the floor, then bounce you a couple of times.
