It is so hard to choose a birth control method that doesn't have a million side effects (i.e. wt. gain). What birth control method is the best in your opinion?

Well - I guess I will answer since I have an apparently unique form of birth control. I have Implanon. Which is the updated, better, fairly new version of Norplant. (I don't know if the same people make it, but it is the same concept). It's a tiny plastic rod they inserted in my arm, was very painless, and have not had a single side affect since getting it. It is good for 3 years, easily removable, no periods, etc. The down side is that it is very new, so there is relatively small amount of research on long term compared to some of the older methods.

I tried three types of bc pills, all of which made me spot two out of four weeks a month...which was great bc because I didn't like having sex when I was spotting, lol. I also tried the patch and in addition to spotting, had the problem if it getting wrinkly, sticky, and once even falling off...
So, we are doing the condom thing. My husband isn't thrilled with it, but we've been using them for three years, with a break when I was pg with my son, and I think it is a small price for him to pay. :) I also liked that when we were ready to conceive, I didn't have to wait, etc.

Before I had my son I was on the Depo (I was a rarity in the fact that I didnt get my period at all, which was freakin' awesome!!) after my son I decided to try Mirena and I hated it - I was CRAZY bitch on the thing - for me too many hormones all store up in there - I am now on the Nuva Ring, my DR prescribes 3 at a time so I can wear it continuously - seems to be all good except for occasional spotting, but I can deal with that, unlike the crazy mood swings!

I'd have to say Mirena as well.  It is amazing!  It hurts a little when you first get it in but I haven't had any side effects.

I have an IUC (inter uterine contraceptive) called Merina. I love it! It works for 5 years and I have had mine now for 3 1/2 years. I don't get a period. Somtimes I spot. And when I want to get preggers again, I just go have it out and I will be able to get pregnant ASAP.

Did it make you gain wt, or have any crazy side effects?

I had the IUC put in in November 07 and by April 08 it was out!  My face, neck, and back were breaking out like I was in jr. high again!!  It was awful -- I didn't even break out that much when I was that age.  I'm on Yaz now and the breakouts are gone, but there is still the weight gain.  :(

Natural Family Planning - the Creighton method. It's not just about the natural part, it's about the relationship b/t you and your hubby, as well as about your reproductive health. I love the way it makes my hubby and I talk about stuff. It's a lot of work to get a hold on, but it's worth it in my opinion, and it soon becomes second nature. Any questions you might have, just ask; i've got references for you when you want them!!

Everyones body is different. I couldn' t take any kind of birth control without gaining 20to 30lbs and gaining a cup size or two in my breasts. Ask your doctor which might be right for you but they all unfortunately come with side effects!

I have an iud and it works wonders. I had to get off of the depo shot because of the weight gain. And i've had my iud now for 3 years and i haven't gained any weight and the biggest plus is that you don't have any more periods. Maybe occasional spotting (usually after intercourse) but just think of all the money you will save on tampons and pads!! :) I would really check into it with your doctor. And do your on research online. Hope this helps! Good luck and let us know what you go with!!

I have had problems with all birth control methods. The pill gave me headaches, nausea and really sore breasts. I tried about 4 different brands. I had the copper iud which made me bleed for 2 out of 4 weeks a month and gave me bad cramps. I have just had the Merina coil removed as i put on 9lbs in 2 months and felt bloated a lot, it also made me very snappy and spotty.

I am using condoms now until i am certain i dont want anymore kids (i am 99% sure at the moment) then i will get my tubes done.

My body really does not like any hormones or foreign bodies in it.

I have the mirena IUCI LOVE IT! I really didn't experience side effects... But.. the only thing I don't like about it is I don't have periods anymore..lol.. With out my alert system.. I'm always like.. am I pregnant.. haha.. I'm just too damn nervous all the time... Other than that I love it.. I believe that it works differently on EVERY PERSON just as any bc does! Mirena I believe DOESN"T cause weight gain.. because I lost 24 pounds since I've had it Perhaps you should do some research on it and talk to your doctor.. It really is the best that I've been on!!! I got pregnant on the pill............ Took it right and everything.. and well lets not jinx myself.. But.. Its been 2 years and I don't have another baby!!

I'm on the Mirena, and it makes me a little crazier when I pms, but I like it. It's very convenient, and I don't have to think about it. My favorite was the Nuva-Ring, and I've tried a lot of different bc's. I agree with what someone said earlier, it's just about what is right for you!

I have the Mirena and I adore it!! Seriously, it pretty much rocks. I got it in August, and my periods are all but gone. Woot!! I can deal with the other side effects if I don't have to deal with that, lol.

Seriously though, I feel like it's affected my sex drive. Which is possible since it's hormonal. I know some people who just kept spotting even after a year or longer and ended up having it removed. I know some people get acne with it. I guess it really just depends on how your body reacts with the hormones.

I got the Mirena. The pill was to much of an obligation for me. The ring I personal had alot of issues with. I am not going to get shots for birth control. My biggest problem with Mirena was cramps for two days after I had it inserted. I know alot of people who have and they all told me that the craps the day after was the only issue theyhad as well.

This is a great question, I cannot wait to read through all the answers. After I have this baby I'm thinking of an IUD and condoms. I got pregnant the first time while on the Ortho Evra patch and this time around I was using condoms, never had one break or anything like that and I still got pregnant. I cannot remember to take a pill everyday and the NuvaRing is not for me, I've had it before. I breastfed and the IUD is one of the few options that you can have while nursing. I don't plan on having anymore kids but a tubal litigation is too permanent for me right now. I'm young and will probably change my mind.

There are possible side effects to everything but I got pregnant on the pill, the patch made me gain weight and super moody and I just had Mirena put in a little over a month ago, after my daughter was born and while it was uncomfortable at first it's fine now. I haven't gained any weight or had any other side effects. Also, I had a friend who went from a size zero to 14 on depo and another who has the ring and hates it so I guess it really depends on you.

I'm a huge fan of the Fertility Awareness Method which is outlined in the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility. It's all natural- you take your temp in the morning, keep track of different signs of fertility, and use a barrier method (i.e. condom, diaphragm, etc.) when you are fertile. It's not as much work as people make it out to be- and once you learn your body, it's really simple and makes you feel like you're responsible for your own health. I know it's not for everyone, but I've never been on the pill and never will.

I had a IUC (Mirena) Put in Nov 13 of last year, this was my 3rd form of BC, I started off on Ortho Tri-cyclen, started with that April'05 and ended up prego with my lil girl, after I had her the OB offered (DEPO) And that was horrible, I gained ALOT of weight, didn't know when my period was ending and when it was starting, there was no time between cycle's. I just kept bleeding, I was a BITCH to hubby the entire time I was on it. I finally said, Enough. July '07 and had the OB put me back on Ortho, at least with that I wasn't moody and bleeding all the time. Since I've been on Mirena my periods are better and have started getting lighter and shorter, I haven't had any side effects and my OB even informed me that after sometime I would stop having a period and it's good for 5yrs. I LOVE it and recomend it. It is expensive but worth it :)

i had a merina put in almost a year ago and the only side effects i experienced was falling pregnant! i am now almost 4 months along and the merina is still in there. it's behind the baby so they can't get it out but they say the baby will be born healthy so fingers crossed.

I think it's whatever works best for your body cuz birth control reacts differently in different people. I tried the pill & kept forgetting to take them. I tried the shot they had out before the Depo (can't remember the name of it) & that one had me on my period for 3 months. So now I'm on the Depo shot which works just fine for me. But honestly, even with the Depo, I still use good old-fashioned condoms as a just-in-caser.

I have the same thing erin sears has, i LOVE it! I've tried the pill, i just cant remember to take it, I tried the patch and its like a bandaid, gets all yucky on the edges & wrinkles up and if it comes off theres no getting it back on. I tried the nuva ring and it was HORRIBLE, it just didnt work for me. I've had mirena for less than a year but i love, i had no period for about 6 months and now its very light and lasts less than a week. it's uncomfortable to have put in but totally worh, if you get it i suggest taking to big ibuprofen before you leave for the DR's, when you get it in you cramp horribly, just for the day, and maybe the next day.

You put it in yourself and wear it for three weeks then on the fourth week you take it out. there can be some serious side effects with any IUD even though i dont think that they contain any of the hormones that the pill or the patch does. my mom got an IUD and it implanted itself in her uterine wall && she had to have it sergically taken out.. she got pregnant anyways && it caused her to miscarry the baby she was going to have. you can have some serious issues with anything u take..

I strongly recomend Ortho Evra, I have had no side effects at all with it and its easier to remember to change the patch once a week then a pill the same time daily, and with the patch it can be changed in the morning night or whatever time of day you wants, it can be put basically anywhere on your body so it can be hidden from clothes plus my boyfriend takes comfort in seeing it knowing that im on it and havent forgotten to take a pill or anything

If you don't want to take a birth control that has any side effects (which they all do), then you can do something more natural such as the diaphragm. I just talked to my doctor about all of the birth control options, b/c I have used 2 different types of pills and the Nuva ring. I wanted to try the Norplant, but it was discontinued, and I wasn't able to get the Mirena b/c of a tilted uterus. I tried the shot, but I didn't like the side effects so I only got it one time. My Dr went through the list and I decided I am going to try the diaphragm. She said they will fit me for it, then I will pick it up from the pharmacy and all you do is put some spermicide on it before use, insert, then after use, remove after an hour or 2. Good luck finding what suits you!

the only birth control method that has worked for me is the copper T IUD. It doesn't mess with your hormones, so no mood swings , migranes, weight gain. the only issues, are more intense cramping with your period and if the IUD shifts somehow you will have to have it removed surgically( the chances for that are minimal though).

Good old fashion condoms. I feel the same way Alexii dose about extra hormones but, I do not have the dedication to use the calendar method properly. I have also used spermicidal and they can get kinda messy. I have tried many hormonal methods and Low dose pills were my favorite. The patch has a high dose of hormones. I liked the convenience but, but the blood clot problems people were having was frightening.
