mommy seperation anxiety

My son will be 3 in September. I am a stay at home mom. He has just started this seperation anxiety. During the day he is either glued to my hip, or I'm holding him. If i am sitting it's not enough to be by me he wants to be in my lap. He has always slept in his own bed, and we've never had a problem getting him to go to sleep. Just turn the light off and tuck him in and he has never fought us. But now it's horrible. He doesn't even want to be away from me at night. I am going crazy. I can't get anything done. If the phone rings and I answer it, he automaticly starts yelling and trying to get my attention. I spend plenty of alone time with him. I am always taking him to the park and stuff, so it's not like he should be dying for attention.

Anyone have any ideas on to make this easier? I don't have people around that can take him for a couple hours to give me a break. I just want to not want to pull my hair out.

Is there any kids around his age that he can have a "play date" with? Or are there any play groups around your area that you can go to even once a week? Don't give in to him and start letting him sleep in your bed. Re-assure him that he is just fine. My son is 11 mos old and will cry when I leave the room, but with some toys and a min or 2 of crying he stops and continues to play.

Have you tried getting him a play group or even go to daycare a few days a week. getting him more interacted with children his age can help.  You say its all of a sudden, has something traumatic happened recently this could be the cause for it.
