MTV's new series: 16 and Pregnant

In my opinion, the show doesn't promote having a child that young because it shows the hardship of what the teens go through while pregnant, in school, and dealing with having a child.

I have only seen one episode. This past week on friday i think. But the girl i saw seemed to have alot of trouble. I felt kind of bad for her because her mom was such a bitch. I think because she didnt want the girl to keep the baby she was going to do everything to make her life hell. I think that episode made it show how hard it really is. On top of everything the girl had to take her HS credits at a college because her friends(so called) started treating her like crapt. But I did like the part at the end of the show when her GF came over and tried to convince her to go out for like two hours with them and she refused because she had to take care of her baby. I know MTVs point behind the show but unfortunately with todays teens it can send the wrong message too.

This post reminds me of an episode of Dr Phil I watched a few years ago. These two girls (aged 14 and 16) were so desperate to become mothers so they were given life like babies (by the show) for 48 hours. They were filmed over the 48 hours and by the end of it, there minds were changed.

well its shocking.. i personally would hate for any other young person to go through the shit some bitches put you through when your a young mum.. i think all mtv is doing is promoting becoming a mum young.. i was a mum at 15 so i know how hard it is.. people get such a bad idea of us through television programs such as these.. some people just cant accept young mums are fab mums because of silly programs..

I got pregnant when I was 15. I have watched the show, and if I had seen all that, I would have thought twice about adoption. The show Christa is talking about, when the child was face down on the couch, he wasnt. He was on his side and that was the best mom I saw out of all the shows. She finished school, got her own place and was taking care of her son while studying, working and dance class, which she quit to spend more time with her son. I do think it promotes pregnancy, but it can go either way. But some of these comments show that we try to hide everything from our kids, but if my child watched this, I would be pointing out how tough it is and how you have to give up your life, making sure they understand the point of the show. And as for getting pregnant to be on the show, the show only has one series, like all mtv shows, so these girls were already pregnant when asked to be on it.

If you saw the one yesterday, it was a cake walk. Didn't make it look hard all :(

I just saw the end of an episode yesterday! The girl didn't even break a sweat when giving birth. She was such a idiot kid who kept talking like a valley girl. It's sick. They made it sound like such a great thing to have one so young! I'm a first time mother of 27 and I can't imagine having a child any earlier!

I think the show is making teen pregnancy look easy and like its a good thing to do. When everyone knows that its not. It is ridiculous. Im not against young mothers at all its their choice but young teens of all ages watch MTV I think the media sensationalizes it enough without having to create a show. I was 19 when I had my first daughter, but i was on depo shot and wasnt trying to get pg, but I was also in college at the time and graduated with an Associates some of the young moms dont even finish hs and then end up having even more kids by the time they are 18. It is a viscious cycle. I personally am disappointed in MTV.

I think it shows no matter age, race some people are more mature they may have made mistakes but some are now more responsible then others. Like what Amie said one chose formula as she didnt want to breast feed so she could prop a bottle ... but one is selfless and will make a family whole.

WOW as if 16 year olds didnt already think children were accsesories , WTF are MTV doing thats so irresponsible of them !! i mean some trun out great mothers but dont make it " cool "

I think its shameless and ignorant...its bad enough teenagers have sex, bad enough they get pregnant. Who's bright idea was it to glorify them on tv??? Oh wait! Maury Povich has been doing that for years....

The older my kids get, the less tv they will be allowed to watch!

What a thread to find after a long day. I went searching to see if I could find the episode online. Stupid ones that show it though don't stream to Canada. I hate that. Anyways,
what I could find disturbed me a bit. I saw a mom hit her pregnant teen! I don't care if it was just a smack to the shoulder, why would you even raise your hand to a pregnant person? Good lord.
I also saw a teenager saying she was going to formula feed because if you breast feed... "you can't just like bring them to bed and like prop them with their bottle". WTH?!
I also saw another one make the decision to give hers up for adoption so the baby could have a better life. I applaud this mom.
There seems to be a variety of it all that could happen. I wish I would have known about this and I probably would have watched it.
I get the idea behind it, that MTV wants to promote it's not all roses and rainbows having a child. And after seeing the little bits I did see I don't see how any teenager would think it's a good idea to get pregnant. If they do think, hey that's for me, then wow they are stupid and probably would be no matter the age they had a kid.
I feel bad for the teen moms. I was one in a sense, I was 18, but I also had a few brains in my head that have always been there and knew what I was getting into. My parents, thank god, were not judgmental they were helpful and supportive. It made my life as a mom start out much easier. I think if I had a mom like a few I'd seen in the clips I never would have made it. Yes it's not a good idea to be a teen mom but shit happens. Educate them, support them and most of all... keep your damaging self righteous attitudes to yourself. It's hard enough being a mom period. It's even harder when you're still pretty much a child yourself.

Thats it lets give 16 yr olds an idea. Get pregnant and you can be on tv. Not thinking thats a good thing. No Tv show can show exactly what motherhood is like. All this show is gonna do it make more 16yr old want babies.

Well, here's the first episode. I personally found it to be very sad and kinda like a train wreck: it's horrific but you can't stop watching.

Hmmm...we don't get MTV, but it kind of scares me...I guess the only thing that I'm worried about is how the show will be handled. If it was done by a channel like TLC or the Women's Television Network I would be less concerned (A Baby Story, Style By Jury, A Wedding Story...all reality t.v., but I think done with quite a bit of taste and dignity), but then again I do not know MTV too well so perhaps they will not try to sensationalize or over dramatize. Tegan, I loved your comment...I hope its the second as well.

Christa - posted on 06/14/2009

I won't watch it. I saw the preview with the baby face down on the couch while the mother just ignored it lying on the other couch and it made me furious. I won't watch young girls neglect their children.

WHAT????? they have nothing better to do ...shame MTV well i guess it can go either one of two ways every 16 year old will wanna get pregnant because they seen it on tv or the show will show the real side of parenting and turn them off i hope for the shows sake that its the second .........and don't get me wrong i am not against the young mums out there i am one myself i'm against the show and i guess we just have to wait and see how it goes
