My son is 17months and hits...but he goes to day care at our local college..there, they teach the kids soft touches and do hand over hand assist and like "pet the other child" to show how to be gentle...so far that is starting to work with my son..kids just get soo excited , that's how my son is. Excited to see other children.

With my daughter, hitting gets an immediate time out because it is an unacceptable behavior. Kids can be aggressive when they get frustrated and don't know how to express their feelings but it is important to reinforce and be consistent with the fact that hitting is not ok. It's a toddlers job to explore and they like to test their boundaries/get a reaction because any attention from mom as far as their concerned is good attention. I find the time out works great but the first few times can be a challenge, just stick with it and you will see results.
